Identification Friend or Foe & Mode 5 Combat ID for Military UAS

uAvionix is a leading developer of communications, navigation, and surveillance solutions for military UAS (unmanned aircraft systems).

uAvionix develops low SWaP TSO-certified and uncertified avionics for tactical Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) markets.

Our cross-disciplinary team of experts specialize in embedded RF engineering, hardware, software, and cloud services to provide low SWaP and affordable ADS-B transponders, IFF transmitters and receivers, and GPS receivers for the defense sector.

Mode 5 Combat ID & IFF Solutions for Defense

Engineered to the highest standards, uAvionix low-SWaP systems can be installed on Group 1 or Group 2 sUAS. Our RT-2087/ZPX IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) solutions provide secure Combat ID with Modes 1, 2, 3/A, C, S, and 5 interoperability for tactical UAV.

RT-2087:ZPX AIMS

ZPX systems are rigorously tested to ensure the highest performance specifications and operation within harsh environments. AIMs Mk XIIB certificated ZPX transponders contain internal crypto emulators to provide non-classified Mode 5 testing and demonstration capability and are crypto-appliqué compatible.

ZPX transponders are also compliant with civil airspace requirements as Mode S/1090ES ADS-B transponders, simplifying aircraft configurations.

Key Solutions:

  • ZPX-A – Micro Mode 3/A, C, S, and ADS-B OUT transponder for Group 1–2 UAS, enabling civil airspace integration with low SWaP and optional pairing with SBAS GPS and autopilots.
  • ZPX‑1 – AIMS-certified Mode 5 transponder with ADS-B capabilities for Group 2+ UAS, compatible with KIV-79 crypto for NATO-standard IFF; supports Mode S EHS and Mode 5 Level 2-B receive.
  • RT-2087/ZPX – Compact Mode 5 L1/2 transponder supporting ADS-B In/Out, autopilot integration, crypto emulator tools, and 250 W output power for tactical UAS and high-altitude ops up to 60,000 ft.
  • ZPR – Passive Mode 5 L2/2-B and dual-band ADS-B receiver for air, land, and maritime platforms; supports KIV-77/79 crypto, GNSS timing options, and dense signal environments.
  • SkyTAK – Portable surveillance solution for dismounted, vehicle-mounted, and UAV teams; passively receives ADS-B and Mode 5 Level 2/2-B traffic for real-time situational awareness via ATAK, WinTAK, and WebTAK.
