Micropol Fiberoptic provides essential guidance for cleaning Expanded Beam (EB) connectors, ensuring reliable optical performance in fiber optic systems.
EB connectors feature a non-contacting design, meaning that mating them without prior cleaning typically does not cause permanent damage. However, keeping the optical interface clean is critical for optimal performance.
To begin, gather recommended materials including fresh water, dishwashing liquid, cleaning wipers, clean dry air, and a Fiber Optic Splice & Connector Cleaner (POC3M). For connectors exposed to heavy dirt or grease, wash them with fresh water or a mild detergent solution, then rinse thoroughly. After removing the protective cap, inspect the optical interface. Light contamination may only require wiping, while heavier debris should be cleaned using swabs with detergent and fresh water.
Next, use POC3M on a large swab to clean the guide pins, optical lenses, EB insert, and any exposed threads, followed by a small swab for the guide pin hole. Blow clean air over the interface to remove any remaining solvent or particles. Visually inspect the lenses and repeat the process if necessary. Once clean, immediately replace the protective cap or mate the connectors to prevent contamination. Always avoid using damaged components or reusing crimp assemblies.
