Mesh Radio for Defense

Mesh Radio by Doodle Labs

Nano Mesh Rider Radio by Doodle Labs

Mesh radios utilize mesh networking technology, which allows each node in a network to communicate with every other node. Some mesh topologies may utilize a central master node, but others are completely decentralized.

Decentralized wireless mesh networking is ideal for tactical and military radio communications, as it allows data to be rerouted if nodes are destroyed or taken offline, allowing for more resilient operations. Mesh networks may involve a mixture of static and mobile nodes, and may be used to complement SATCOM (satellite communications) or microwave links.

MANET Radios

MANETs (mobile ad hoc networks) are a form of mesh networking in which every node is mobile, and the network forms and changes dynamically. Each node acts as a router, forwarding data according to network conditions and particular routing algorithms, and the transmission of messages from source to intended final destination may require a number of “hops”. This form of mesh radio networking is self-organizing and self-healing, with nodes being added and removed on the fly.

Military Applications

Mesh radios provide communication capabilities for a wide range of military users, including infantry and special forces, ground vehicles, air forces, naval vessels and command centers. Mobile mesh networking is particularly ideal for tactical communications use cases such as vehicle convoys, front-line logistics support, ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), and disaster response.

Fault Tolerance & Encryption

Mesh radios and waveforms may provide a number of advanced features to aid mission-critical communications. The radios may be able to dynamically switch between frequencies in the case of jamming or interference, providing robust fault tolerance. They may also incorporate encryption methods such as AES128 and AES256.

Ruggedized Form Factors

Wireless tactical mesh radios are available in a variety of form factors, including:

  • low-SWaP (size, weight and power) embedded systems
  • handheld
  • man-portable and man-packable units
  • in-vehicle and aircraft radios

They may be ruggedized to protect against challenging conditions faced by warfighters, including dust, sand, water, salt spray, shock and vibration, and extremes of temperature.
