Impact Subsea details the engineering and capabilities of its ISA200 and ISA500 sonar altimeters in a recent podcast focused on underwater measurement accuracy and performance. Read more >>
Impact Subsea’s ISA200 and ISA500 sonar altimeters provide exceptionally precise and reliable distance measurement capabilities for subsea operations. Developed for use in demanding underwater environments, the systems combine advanced acoustic signal processing, adaptive sensitivity control, and durable construction to deliver millimeter-level measurement accuracy for underwater vehicles and platforms supporting defense, research, and inspection applications.
The ISA200 and ISA500 operate using sonar-based ranging, transmitting acoustic pulses to measure distance through sound reflection. The ISA200 achieves measurement ranges exceeding 250 meters (approximately 820 feet), while the ISA500 provides measurements beyond 120 meters (around 393 feet). The achievable range varies according to target reflectivity and environmental conditions. On solid, reflective surfaces such as rock, the ISA500 can reach distances of approximately 175 meters. When measuring softer materials, including marine growth or suspended sediment, the range may reduce to around 80 meters or less. Both models automatically adjust sensitivity to optimize performance across changing conditions.
Each sensor delivers 1-millimeter accuracy and repeatability, achieved through a high-speed digital correlation process that analyzes up to two million echoes per second. This method isolates genuine reflection signals from ambient acoustic noise, ensuring reliable performance in complex or low-visibility subsea environments.
The sensors distinguish between measurement resolution, the smallest detectable change, and true accuracy, the degree to which the measurement corresponds to real-world distance. This capability enables the ISA200 and ISA500 to perform precision tasks that previously required more complex and fragile laser systems, such as subsea docking, pipeline inspection, and ROV or AUV positioning operations.
A built-in correlation factor provides an internal quality assessment for each measurement. The system assigns every acoustic return a correlation score between 0 and 1, effectively serving as a confidence rating. Returns below a 0.5 correlation value are automatically rejected, ensuring that only verified, high-confidence readings are recorded.
The ISA500 also includes an adjustable operating frequency, configurable between 400 and 600 kHz. This flexibility allows operators to mitigate interference when multiple acoustic systems are operating nearby. Both models are fully software configurable through seaView, enabling users to select between detection modes such as “strongest detection” for operations in sediment-heavy conditions or multi-echo capability for monitoring multiple targets simultaneously.
An optional ECHOGRAM function transforms either sensor into a single-beam imaging sonar, generating up to 2,000 data samples per ping to visualize the water column and seabed in real time. This capability enhances situational awareness and assists with identifying subsea features during navigation or inspection.
An optional Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) can also be integrated to provide pitch and roll data. The sensor applies internal trigonometric correction to convert slant-range measurements into true vertical altitude, maintaining accuracy even when the host vehicle is tilted or in motion.
Both models are engineered for resilience and long-term reliability. Constructed from titanium or acetal, they offer high resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress. The ISA500 is rated to a depth of 11,000 meters, exceeding the height of Mount Everest, making it suitable for deployment to the deepest parts of the ocean. Each unit is tested to API 17F standards for shock and vibration, validating performance under severe mechanical loads.
By integrating advanced digital correlation, adaptive frequency control, and robust materials engineering, Impact Subsea provides a reliable and precise sensing solution for subsea operations. The ISA200 and ISA500 altimeters deliver consistent performance in conditions where measurement accuracy is essential to mission success, supporting modern underwater vehicles and systems across defense, scientific, and industrial domains.
