OptiScan from Micropol Fiberoptic is a rugged optical fiber measurement tool designed to provide fast and reliable performance verification for tactical communication networks.
Developed and tested together with the Swedish Armed Forces, the device enables operators to quickly confirm that each fiber channel meets acceptable attenuation levels before, during, and after deployment, helping to ensure safe operation and continuous network performance.
Optical fiber is a key transmission technology for tactical communications, supporting applications ranging from command and control to radar guidance for advanced air defense systems. As these networks are mission-critical for field units, regular verification of fiber links is important to ensure continuous operation and optimal performance in the field.
OptiScan addresses this requirement with a field-ready solution that allows operators to perform rapid functional checks in tactical communication networks. The handheld system is capable of simultaneously testing up to 12 channels in approximately 30 seconds, significantly reducing verification time from the 20-25 minutes typically required with conventional Optical Power Meter (OPM) testing methods.
Simultaneous Multi-Channel Testing
Designed for single-operator use, OptiScan supports fast validation of multiple serially connected cables and can measure up to ten cable reels connected in series, even while still on their reels. This allows communication links to be verified before deployment, re-tested during operation, and checked again prior to storage or redeployment.
Regular verification after operational use can also help identify faulty cables before they are returned to storage or prepared for further deployment. The system includes a cleaning kit to support field maintenance procedures, allowing connectors to be cleaned and re-tested immediately if a failed measurement occurs.
The system supports a wide range of optical connector technologies, including Micropol’s FALCON™ and PROCON™ expanded beam connectors, as well as other optical connectors such as HMA and HMC. It also provides up to 30 hours of continuous battery operation and supports simultaneous use and charging for uninterrupted testing in the field.
Loop & Link Measurement Modes
OptiScan supports two operating modes depending on the specific need. In Loop mode, the system measures the total attenuation of a fiber pair and provides a simple PASS or FAIL result based on predefined thresholds. This enables straightforward functionality checks without requiring interpretation of measurement data, making it suitable for regular field verification of tactical communication links.
In Link mode, two OptiScan units are used to measure the attenuation of individual fibers separately, making the mode suitable for troubleshooting cables and for measurements where precise attenuation values are critical.
Delivered as a complete field kit, OptiScan includes the measurement tool, loopback plug, charger, cleaning kit, operator’s manual, and rugged carrying case, providing operators with a practical solution for maintaining fiber network integrity throughout the operational lifecycle.
Additional specifications include support for 2-, 4-, or 12-channel adapters, IP65-rated protection, operation in temperatures from 0°C to +50°C, Laser Class 1 classification, and a weight of 772 g with 5 V operation.
