The U.S. Army’s Capability Program Executive Aviation Project Manager for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems has selected platforms from five vendors, including Vantage Robotics, to proceed to the Manufacturing Readiness Assessment phase of the Short Range Reconnaissance program.

Following competitive fly-off evaluations conducted at Clarke Range near Anniston, Alabama, systems developed by Parrot Drones, Skydio, Inc., Skycutter, Teal Drones, and Vantage Robotics — including Vantage’s Vesper drone — were chosen for further assessment. The evaluations tested candidate platforms across several operational parameters, including flight range, endurance, frequency agility, imaging capabilities, autonomy, portability, and ease of use.
The selection process began earlier in the year when the product office issued a Call for Solutions under its UAS Marketplace acquisition framework, seeking advanced commercial small unmanned aircraft systems. Over a dozen platforms met the initial criteria based on written proposals, leading to the late-June flight demonstrations. The Army utilizes a multi-vendor procurement strategy to foster competition and accelerate the deployment of battlefield technology.

Platoon-level reconnaissance drones form a key component of the Army’s modernization strategy, which aims to provide persistent Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition capabilities across all operational echelons. Designed to serve as force multipliers, these platforms enhance ground operations, enable kinetic effects, improve troop survivability, and provide field commanders with expanded situational awareness.
