Tocaro Blue highlights its ProteusCore™ radar processing software and situational awareness tools designed to support defense system integrators and enhance marine radar capability through machine learning.
Radar Processing for System Integrators
ProteusCore™ is radar processing software that applies machine learning to address traditional limitations of marine radar. The platform incorporates radar control drivers, automatic radar tuning known as Auto Focus, and automated object classification and tracking within a single development environment.
By improving the presentation and usability of radar returns within the user interface, ProteusCore strengthens situational awareness while minimizing manual radar interaction.
Deployability and Cost Efficiency
ProteusCore operates using CPU processing only and does not require GPU resources. This enables a cost-efficient implementation compared to EO/IR camera or LiDAR-based solutions that depend on specialized hardware.
In many cases, ProteusCore runs on existing hardware. For sea trialing, Tocaro Blue provides a Devkit hardware device, which offers direct access to the ProteusCore API.
Designed for developers, the configuration application allows users to view the machine learning pipeline, configure radar parameters, and manage NMEA 2000 settings.
USV Applications and Benefits
Autonomous and remotely operated Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) require sensing systems capable of operating across multiple ranges. ProteusCore enhances commercial off-the-shelf marine radar through machine learning to address radar limitations while reinforcing its advantages.
Effective radar utilization enables USVs to detect objects at greater distances than optical-only systems, while radar and optical fusion increases target validation and supports improved mission outcomes.
ProteusCore provides automated target classification and tracking, configurable real-time alerts accessible through command and control systems, and support for force multiplication and swarming operations. The software tracks an unlimited number of detections without manual adjustment, delivering actionable alerts that support safer navigation in dynamic environments and serving as a perception tool for coordinated USV operations.
Crewed Tactical Craft Applications and Benefits
Operators of small tactical craft are required to make rapid decisions in demanding conditions. Conventional radar displays can be complex and require continuous tuning.
The ProteusCore configuration app allows for viewing of the ProteusCore ML pipeline, configuration of Radar, and configuration of NMEA 2000 settings
ProteusCore enables radar-based collision avoidance systems through automatic radar tuning and automated target detection. This reduces operator workload and allows greater focus on surrounding conditions.
Object classification enables prioritized threat assessment and accurate representation of detected objects within the interface. Classification also enhances vessel tracking performance, as ProteusCore continuously monitors and tracks all detections within the radar’s field of view.
While ProteusCore does not provide native collision alert functionality, it enables clients to develop and configure their own alert systems according to operational requirements. These user-developed alerts can leverage prioritized closest point of approach data to support personnel and equipment safety.
