Thales will provide the French Navy with SonoFlash sonobuoys under a new contract with the DGA.

Designed and manufactured in France in collaboration with domestic SMEs, the SonoFlash system supports France’s sovereign defense strategy in anti-submarine warfare.

Versatile and Interoperable

The SonoFlash sonobuoy is an expendable sonar buoy designed for deployment from maritime patrol aircraft such as the ATL2 and helicopters like the NH90. It offers both active and passive sonar capabilities, featuring a powerful low-frequency emitter and a highly directional receiver. Fully interoperable with Thales’ FLASH dipping sonar and the CAPTAS family of towed array sonars, the SonoFlash enhances submarine detection and tracking operations.

Key Features of SonoFlash Sonobuoy:

  • Dual-Mode Operation: Functions in both active and passive sonar modes.
  • Extended Detection Range: Works with the FLASH dipping sonar for enhanced submarine tracking.
  • Advanced Communication Systems: Enables data sharing across all equipped surface ships, aircraft, and acoustic support centers.
  • Responsive Tracking: Provides rapid adaptability to evasive submarine maneuvers.

Thales’ portfolio in underwater systems includes the SonoFlash sonobuoy, CAPTAS towed sonars, and FLASH dipping sonar, reinforcing its position as a global leader in anti-submarine warfare.

Vice President of Underwater Systems activities at Thales, Sébastien Guérémy, commented, “Through its SonoFlash sonobuoy and the CAPTAS and FLASH sonars, Thales is proud to contribute to the development of the French anti-submarine warfare sector. The excellence of Thales’s offerings solutions in this field is recognised worldwide and is being put to the service of the French Navy in a context of renewed tensions at sea.”
