Tocaro Blue‘s ProteusCore™ is a cutting-edge radar processing software that transforms traditional maritime radar into an intelligent detection and classification system.
Since 2019, Tocaro Blue’s technical team has captured and analyzed over 3,000,000 frames of radar data, creating one of the largest marine radar datasets in the industry. This proprietary dataset powers the machine learning models embedded in ProteusCore, enabling off-the-shelf radar systems to deliver AI-enhanced perception.
Traditional maritime radar often requires constant manual tuning of gain and range to ensure accurate detection. ProteusCore solves this challenge with its patent-pending Autofocus feature, which automatically optimizes radar settings based on sea state, environmental conditions, and proximity to land. This ensures precise detection and classification of objects within the radar field-of-view, providing real-time actionable data to autonomous vessel systems or integrators.
ProteusCore’s advanced radar-based classification capabilities leverage Tocaro Blue’s machine learning models to identify whether detected objects are vessels, buoys, markers, or even land features and wakes. The system’s tracking algorithms automatically acquire, monitor, and discard hundreds of targets, reporting key metrics such as position, velocity, closest point of approach, and predicted trajectory, all without manual intervention.

Radar can be used as a perception sensor to inform autopilot systems about potential collisions. ProteusCore functionality can be used to provide alarms and alerts to the captain.
Further enhancing situational awareness, ProteusCore can integrate with machine vision cameras, improving distance measurements and target tracking to provide full 360-degree coverage. Its versatile radar perception technology serves a wide range of maritime applications, from cruising and fishing vessels to workboats and Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs), offering unprecedented precision, intelligence, and operational safety.
