State-Of-The-Art Hyperspectral Imaging Cameras for Mission-Critical Applications

Cubert is a leading developer of state-of-the-art hyperspectral imaging cameras that provide real-time intelligence for mission-critical military and government applications, enabling superior situational awareness and decision-making.

We are currently partnering with a range of defense and aerospace clients around the world, providing our technology for national and international R&D projects, These include:

  • Fraunhofer IOSB – development of military-grade classification algorithms
  • DLR (German Aerospace Center) – space and UAV system integration)
  • University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich – basic scientific evaluation
  • BAAINBw – reference architectures for sensor system integration
  • NATO STO – conformity work for STANAG 4765

Our ITAR-free products are compliant with a range of military standards such as MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461F, and are designed to work with open interface protocols (GigE Vision, STANAG 4609-compatible metadata integration).

The system operator retains complete control over data acquisition, processing and analysis, and no external cloud services or third-party synchronisation are utilized. This ensures maximum security when working with secret or sensitive data.

Advanced hyperspectral imaging technology for defense & security

Unlike multispectral systems, which only analyse a few broad wavelength bands, hyperspectral sensors capture continuous spectral signatures across dozens or even hundreds of narrow-band channels. This allows them to detect even minimally varying chemical-physical properties, regardless of the shape, colour or temperature of the target object.

This powerful capability makes hyperspectral imaging ideal for enhancing ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), particularly in situations involving camouflage, asymmetric threats or limited reaction times. Specific advantages include:

  • Detection of moving or fleeting targets with stable spectral resolution
  • No mechanical scanning movements, ensuring faster response times and lower susceptibility to vibration
  • Interoperability with C4ISR structures for automated forwarding and evaluation
  • Minimisation of false alarms with simultaneous detection of difficult-to-detect or masked threats
  • Highly resilient in the face of demanding battlefield conditions including dust, rain, fog, temperature fluctuations, and EMI

Versatile capabilities enabling multiple applications

With compact and lightweight footprints and no moving parts, Cubert’s hyperspectral cameras are ideal for integration into a range of platforms including:

  • Gimbal stabilised payloads on UAV-based ISR platforms
  • Border surveillance units, in conjunction with electro-optical towers or radar
  • Field maintenance equipment, for corrosion testing of components without removal
  • CBRN protection vehicles, enabling source location identification in contaminated zones including analysis of suspicious substances in real time

These advanced solutions enable a variety of defense and tactical applications including:

Detection, Tracking & Target Acquisition

Our systems can be configured to detect and highlight spectral anomalies in the field, and to pick up materials invisible to the naked eye or conventional RGB sensor. This can be used to track concealed markers such as invisible infrared ink – watch the video below to see this in practice.

Minefield & Hazard Detection

Our cameras have been successfully deployed for aerial detection of surface and shallow-buried mines, as well as disturbed soil patterns associated with IEDs or UXO. Automatic classification can be carried out either on board the aircraft or by relaying data to the ground station.

Vehicles and cargo can also be rapidly scanned and inspected for contraband or hazardous substances.

Material Discrimination & Camouflage Analysis

Cubert’s hyperspectral systems provide fine-grained differentiation of materials, enabling accurate identification of camouflaged structures, decoys, or synthetic textiles that mimic natural environments. High spectral resolution across the VNIR and SWIR ranges allows classification of both organic and inorganic materials based on reflectance characteristics, with potential for integration into AI and machine-learning-based platforms.

CBRN Threat Detection

Hyperspectral sensors enable the detection of the specific absorption bands produced by hazardous liquids, gases or residues on surfaces. This allows the differentiation of toxic substances from harmless residues, as well as the real-time detection of potential warfare agents on contaminated equipment, vehicles or clothing.

Corrosion & Structure Monitoring

Hyperspectral sensing allows spectral change to be detected well before mechanical failure, ensuring that issues such as oxidation, delamination or micro-crack formation can be spotted and dealt with in a timely manner. This capability is essential for the effective maintenance and repair of aircraft fleets, naval vessels, or bridges and structures under load.

Material & Document Authentication

Spectral fingerprints of colors, inks, security features or plastic mixtures allow reliable material testing without resorting to removal or destructive procedures. This is particularly relevant for logistics checks, ammunition transport, access control and property protection.

Research & Development

The use of hyperspectral data opens up a range of development opportunities for research facilities and defence technology institutes. Possibilities include:

  • Automated AI-powered material classification – extracting spectral signatures directly from the raw data cube and mapping them to known threat profiles
  • Multi-sensor fusion – combine spectral data with SAR, lidar or thermal sources for robust target identification in complex terrain or occlusion
  • Minimisation of energy and data volume – with the aim of making tactical sensor technology evaluable without high-performance computers
  • Experimental validation of spectral detection in fog, rain, particle pollution or under variable solar influence – e.g. to optimise atmospheric correction models for real-time operation
