UAV Navigation–Grupo Oesía has released a major software update for its VNS01 Visual Navigation System, integrating advanced algorithms that constrain positioning errors to approximately 30 meters during extended GNSS outages.
The software update introduces Terrain Referenced Navigation (TRN) and Satellite Map Matching algorithms to maintain high navigation accuracy across contested environments and over previously unflown routes. Designed to support mission continuity in the presence of jamming, spoofing, and other electronic threats, these complementary capabilities offer reliable sources of absolute positioning without depending on continuous satellite coverage.
Satellite Map Matching utilizes preloaded satellite imagery as a positioning reference. By correlating real-time video captured by an onboard camera with geographical features such as roads, rivers, and coastlines, the system generates absolute position corrections that compensate for inertial drift.
Terrain Referenced Navigation complements visual matching by correlating in-flight altitude measurements with preloaded Digital Elevation Models. This elevation-based comparison allows the system to estimate the aircraft’s most probable position and sustain continuous navigation corrections, even when visual references become limited or obscured.
Unlike conventional dead-reckoning navigation systems where positioning drift accumulates continuously with distance traveled, the combined operation of Visual Odometry, Satellite Map Matching, and TRN keeps errors bounded over extended outages. Under favorable operational conditions, the integrated system limits positioning error to approximately 30 meters regardless of total flight distance.
The new software capabilities advance the developer’s multi-sensor approach to assured autonomy and resilient positioning in contested airspace. UAV Navigation–Grupo Oesía will present these latest innovations in mission continuity and autonomous navigation at upcoming industry events, including UNVEX in Spain and MSPO in Poland.
