Spectra Group has been awarded a €13 million contract by a NATO ally for Comtech’s Mobile Transportable Transmission System (MTTS) Troposcatter terminals, including a comprehensive spares and support package.
The agreement reflects growing NATO demand for resilient Beyond-Line-Of-Sight (BLOS) communications capable of operating independently of satellite infrastructure in contested and congested environments. Spectra Group, which specializes in secure and resilient communications for denied and contested environments, acquired global distribution rights for Comtech’s Troposcatter Family of Systems in 2024, excluding the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which remain under Comtech management.
The procurement covers the larger and more powerful MTTS within Comtech’s Troposcatter Family of Systems. The system is designed to deliver assured, high-capacity communications links over ranges in excess of 250 km, depending on terrain and environmental conditions.
Its performance can bridge significant geographic barriers within national borders, providing secure strategic communications between dispersed locations where required. Tropospheric scatter technology uses the troposphere, up to about 13 km altitude, to provide high-bandwidth, low-latency communications independent of satellites and resilient in GPS/GNSS-denied environments. This technology is designed for use in peer-on-peer conflict and Multi-Domain Integration operations.
The modular, transit case-based Comtech MTTS system is mobile, flexible, and rapidly deployable when high power of 500 W is required, delivering bandwidths of up to 210 Mbps in dual-stream mode, an operating mode used across the Troposcatter Family of Systems. Unlike geostationary satellites, troposcatter communications can also operate effectively in polar regions. The system’s directional, low-power, and complex waveform characteristics make it difficult to detect and resistant to electronic warfare interference.
