SOMAG has expanded its Passive Vibration Isolation Ring (PaVIR) technology to naval and land-based mission-critical sensor systems, including pan-tilt cameras, EO/IR systems, and radar, and will showcase this vibration isolation and stabilization technology at DSEI London 2025, Booth S12-330.
The PaVIR robust mechanical damping system reduces vibration in the harshest environments before it reaches sensitive sensor equipment by breaking the vibration path between the platform and payload. This meets the rugged requirements of naval and land operations.
This is vital because vibration from engines, waves, or rough terrain poses a constant risk to sensitive surveillance and targeting systems, potentially causing wear, data loss, or system failure.
The PaVIR is tailored to each individual solution, mounting system and stabilization mount. It is reliable and rugged, requiring no power, software, or calibration unlike active systems. The system’s frequency of maintenance intervals and the longevity vary depending on the individual solution and application, but in general these are low.
There are many key advantages to using the PaVIR in naval vessels and ground vehicles. This technology lowers mechanical wear and vibration-induced failure over time, increasing the equipment’s lifespan. It also removes motion blur, jitter, and sensor instability during operation to improve video and imaging performance quality.

SOMAG’s PaVIR is designed for easy integration and maintenance, requiring no wiring or power. Built to withstand harsh conditions, the technology utilizes rugged materials for maritime and land operations, offering features like corrosion resistance and shock durability.
The ring is suitable for stabilized pan-tilt camera systems, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting equipment, and distance measurements using stadiametric methods.
PaVIR can also be integrated into naval and land platforms globally, including shipboard surveillance systems, vehicle-mounted perimeter observation units, fixed installations on coastal security platforms, and mobile defense and homeland security systems.
SOMAG’s vibration solution is well-established in its airborne product line, included as standard equipment in systems such as SOMAG GSM 5000 and DSM 400.
The PaVIR is also an optional accessory for land gyro mounts and marine gyro stabilizers, like the RSM 50 and NSM 500, to further performance and improve sensor protection in demanding operational environments.
The company’s PaVIR technology serves a wide range of users, including defense integrators working on naval ISR platforms, OEMs integrating stabilized sensors into ruggedized systems, security forces using mobile ground surveillance units, and Coast Guard and maritime patrol operators.
Every ring is custom-designed to individual payload’s weight and specific configuration for seamless integration with existing stabilization platforms. This means no PaVIR is mass-produced, with each unit tailored to meet personal requirements and preferences.
The isolation ring can be easily installed between the payload and the stabilization mount itself. Though the general configuration and installation varies between PaVIRs regarding the final design for each application.
