Tulip Tech is a developer of ultra-high energy density battery technologies for military and government drones and unmanned systems.

In this Q&A, Alexander Nijst, Chief Commercial Officer at Tulip Tech, discusses how high-density battery platforms, rapid prototyping, and automated European manufacturing are improving endurance, safety, and supply reliability for unmanned systems. He explains how modular, configurable packs, defense-grade traceability, and a scalable robotic production model support longer-duration missions and faster adaptation to evolving battlefield and industrial requirements.
Why is advanced battery technology becoming mission-critical for the next generation of UAVs, UGVs, and UUVs – and how does battery performance directly shape their mission capabilities?
Advanced batteries are mission-critical because they determine the physical limits of endurance, payload, and readiness. Higher energy density increases time on station, extends range, expands available payload for sensors or effectors, and reduces the logistics burden. In practice, this influences tactics, enables persistent ISR and longer loitering attack or delivery missions, and lowers the number of platforms required to complete a mission.
Modern conflicts, such as Ukraine, have shown how endurance defines operational success – how does Tulip address this requirement?
Tulip Tech improves endurance through high-density battery packs, rapid customization, and localized production. We supply proven high-density systems that have increased flight times by tens of percent, provide smart battery integration for system-level safety and management, and run a fast prototyping and qualification pipeline so units can be adapted quickly to evolving battlefield needs. Tulip also maintains an operational presence and supply channels in-region to significantly shorten lead times.
How are the performance and reliability needs of defense customers similar to those of industrial or commercial drone operators?
They overlap heavily. All three need predictable endurance, safe and repeatable performance, traceable quality, robust thermal management and consistent supply. Defense customers demand additional certification, traceability and sovereign supply. Industrial operators demand reliability, cost efficiency and fast support. In practice, Tulip meets a shared core of technical requirements and applies additional defense-grade quality assurance and supply-chain controls where needed.
How does Tulip ensure that its innovations can scale effectively across both military and commercial applications?
By designing modular, configurable battery platforms, combining rapid prototyping with automated manufacturing, and building Tier-1 partnerships to achieve volume. Tulip pairs fast R&D and qualification with a robotic gigafactory model that maintains quality and traceability at scale. The company also advances certification and ISO processes so military and commercial variants share a common, scalable baseline.
Europe’s reliance on imported cells has become a strategic vulnerability, how is Tulip addressing this challenge through its Netherlands Gigafactory?
Tulip’s Netherlands gigafactory directly addresses the vulnerability by bringing cell and pack production to Europe under robotic, auditable processes. The factory reduces dependency on foreign cell supply by producing high-density cells and packs locally, supporting traceability, rapid customization and defence procurement needs while improving lead times and quality control.
How does regional cell production strengthen both defense readiness and industrial competitiveness?
Regional production shortens lead times, enables bespoke chemistries and configurations, ensures auditable quality and traceability, and reduces geopolitical supply risk. For defense that means faster re-arm and local repair cycles, certified and auditable supply chains, and sovereign control over critical technologies. For industry it means reliable supply, faster product cycles, and local jobs and investment that support competitiveness.
Thank you for your time. It has been a pleasure speaking with Alexander, and we look forward to seeing how Tulip Tech’s high-density battery platforms, defense-grade traceability, and rapid prototyping strengthen endurance, reliability, and sovereign supply for the next generation of defense unmanned systems.
