As naval planners continue to develop both manned and unmanned ships as integrated systems, there is an increasing need for modular electronics that can be easily incorporated into existing or new systems and endure various shipboard conditions.
MilDef design, test, qualify, manufacture, and support rugged computing products specifically tailored for military use in the harshest environments. As a registered Small Business, MilDef is a trusted supplier to numerous armed forces deployed worldwide.
MilDef’s rugged electronics are known for their modularity and reliability, engineered to perform in demanding shipboard environments.
With SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) considerations in mind, MilDef’s flagship products can be customized for size, power, bulkhead, and deck connections, enabling cost-effective and timely replacement of shipboard consoles or system components.
The MilDef Approach
MilDef’s approach encompasses all stages—from concept design to component sourcing, rapid prototyping, and customization—to ensure military personnel receive the rugged electronics they need, precisely when they need them.
In-House Capabilities
Design
MilDef invests in skilled personnel and advanced tools for product design, development, and testing to continuously enhance product quality, reliability, and performance. As an OEM focused exclusively on the defense sector, MilDef has honed its design capabilities to meet specific user requirements, including:
- Electronics
- Mechanical design
- Printed circuit board layouts
- Customization (blueprint strategy)
- System integration (incorporation of MilDef products into a sub-system)
- Thermal analysis and passive cooling
- Ruggedization to the latest military standards
- EMC/EMI protection
- Prototyping (3D-printed proof of concept or milled aluminum chassis)
Environmental/EMI Testing
MilDef designs and tests products to strict military standards (e.g., MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, RTCA/DO-160), which is crucial for the production of rugged hardware. MilDef rigorously tests not only every finished product but also the individual components. In-house testing resources include:
- EMI/EMC test chambers for MIL-STD-461 CE102, RE102, and DEF STAN 59-411
- MIL-STD-1275 test equipment
- Temperature cycling and Ingress Protection test chambers
- Vibration, shock, and drop testing
MilDef also uses third-party test facilities for accredited testing to DEF STAN 59-411, RTCA/DO-160, and TEMPEST (SDIP-27) standards.
Manufacturing
MilDef manufactures all products in-house to maintain strict control over quality, bill of materials traceability, lead times, and delivery. An automated Production Test System (PTS) is used for final quality control, generating unique test reports for every unit produced to ensure readiness for deployment straight from the box.
Supply Chain and Delivery
MilDef’s supply chain management team is involved in every development initiative, ensuring that component suppliers meet ruggedization standards, quality criteria, and MilDef’s 10-year production and sustainment lifecycle plans.
Project Management
MilDef’s dedicated resources, streamlined processes, and proven track record ensure effective project management for complex new developments or product customizations, delivered on time and within budget.
