SCD has announced a follow-on order from a major global homeland security integrator for its high-definition mid-wave infrared (HD MWIR) detectors that feature an extended operational lifespan.

The detectors, known as BlackBird 1280, are powered by SCD’s advanced High Operating Temperature (HOT) technology combined with a robust advanced cooling design. This combination results in a 2.5-fold increase in operational lifetime compared to standard models.

This breakthrough capability dramatically extends the intervals between necessary maintenance sessions, addressing the critical requirement for long-term reliability and minimal upkeep at remote, difficult-to-access security installations. The extended operational life is a key advantage for remote, mission-critical, and continuous 24/7 surveillance applications.

The new long life BlackBird 1280 detectors are engineered for simple integration into both new and existing systems. They provide high-definition infrared imaging, long-range detection, and enhanced reliability across various operational settings, including naval platforms. By integrating a cutting-edge HOT MWIR sensor with robust cooling technology, SCD aims to enable system integrators to deliver advanced situational awareness and persistent surveillance capabilities.

Shai Fishbein, VP of Business Development & Marketing at SCD, commented on the development, “The demand for high-reliability, 24/7 border, naval and infrastructure security is growing rapidly. Our customer is enabling the operation of complex security and long-range reconnaissance networks across remote and hard-to-reach sites or platforms, where maintenance is both challenging and costly.” He added that this new generation “sets a new standard by combining outstanding image quality with unmatched operational longevity. This enables our customers to minimize disruption, extend system uptime, and redefine what’s possible in continuous homeland security and defense operations.”

SCD specializes in the development and manufacture of a wide array of cooled and uncooled infrared detectors for the defense technology sector.
