Radio frequency and drone detection specialist Metis has been selected to provide its passive radio frequency sensors to KONGSBERG as part of the £30 million Polish SAN counter Uncrewed Air System programme.

The contract will see Metis deliver its SKYPERION Lightweight passive radio frequency sensor, a system engineered for flexible operational deployment. This technology can be mounted on vehicles for mobile use, rapidly deployed to safeguard static locations, or integrated into maritime environments, providing operators with a highly flexible capability across a wide range of operational scenarios. Already in service with other NATO nations, the sensor is typically deployed within a layered counter-uncrewed air system architecture to deliver enhanced situational awareness and support the detection and identification of nefarious drone threats.

The sensor will contribute to a broader integrated defense capability under the SAN programme. Early in 2026, KONGSBERG and its consortium partner Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa announced an over £1 billion contract to deliver 18 counter-uncrewed air system batteries for Poland. This overarching programme covers a wide variety of effectors, including missiles, interceptor drones, and 35 mm, 30 mm and 12.7 mm guns, designed to detect and counter a diverse array of aerial threats. This contract represents a significant milestone for both organisations, highlighting the growing strength of collaboration between defense industries in addressing evolving security challenges across Europe and NATO partner nations.

Ben Hewitt, Chief Commercial Officer at Metis, said, “Securing this contract with KONGSBERG is a major achievement for Metis and reinforces the confidence placed in our technology by other leading defense partners. The SAN cUAS programme represents an important step forward in strengthening counter-drone capability in Poland and across the region. SKYPERION’s unique passive RF detection capability is the product of choice for many global defense primes who wish to integrate superior drone detection into their cUAS systems.”
