Ligna Energy’s S-Power supercapacitors have a third-party verified carbon footprint.
The verification was carried out in accordance with international Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) standards (EN 50693 and ISO 14025), based on a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The independent assessment covers the full cradle-to-gate lifecycle, including raw material extraction, transport, and manufacturing at the company’s site in Norrköping, Sweden.
The verified data shows that the 1.2F 2.7V S-Power supercapacitor has a cradle-to-gate footprint of only 12 g CO₂e per unit. This low impact is achieved through the use of bio-based materials, minimal metal content, and an ultrathin design optimized for resource efficiency. The company also anticipates a further 30% reduction in this footprint through ongoing material and process improvements.
Key results from the verified life cycle assessment (EN 15804+A2 & ISO 14025) confirm the carbon footprint as only 12 g CO₂e per unit. Additionally, the assessment states that nearly 80% of materials are recovered at end of life, and 6% of inputs are secondary materials. The product also contains no REACH SVHC substances above 0.1%, signifying it is free from the most concerning toxic materials.
The LCA and the connected EPD were completed by the third-party EPD Author Greenstep Oy and verified by EPD Hub.
Ligna Energy notes that electronics have long relied on toxic and hard-to-recycle components, such as batteries and supercapacitors containing harmful substances like PFAS and heavy metals. They emphasize that transparency is essential, noting that while many products claim to be environmentally friendly, Ligna Energy’s verified CO₂ data provides standardized and reliable information that OEMs and designers can trust.
The company adds that this verified climate impact helps customers by providing confidence in meeting their own sustainability targets, avoiding greenwashing, and staying ahead of tightening regulations, such as the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 and new U.S. EPA rules.
