Panasonic has introduced a range of bespoke services designed to enhance computing capabilities for the defense sector. The end-to-end offering, known as TOUGHBOOK Secure, is intended to protect assets and data throughout a device fleet’s lifecycle, incorporating mission-specific configurations, secure deployments, and specialized maintenance plans for assets in the field.

The service allows for the modification of devices during the manufacturing process, providing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions tailored to specific operational requirements. Due to the modular design of these notebooks and tablets, users can select only the necessary peripherals and components, including smartcard and fingerprint readers.

Specific hardware details can be adjusted to support tactical needs. For example, LCD screens can be modified to provide greater control over dimming, which assists defense teams in avoiding detection and reducing reflection or glare during covert operations.

For environments requiring high security, hardware components such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, cameras, and microphones can be entirely removed to prevent unauthorized access from third-party devices. Data security is further addressed through the inclusion of NATO-approved secure drives or data-at-rest cryptography drives from Viasat. These options include the Eclypt Core encrypted internal Solid State Drive (SSD), certified in the UK for securing Top Secret information, and the Viasat DARC SSD, which utilizes military-grade 256-bit hardware encryption and two-factor authentication.

“For defence organisations, ensuring that mission-critical data can be safely shared and accessed is critically important, irrespective of location or environment,” stated Charlotte Langridge, UK Defence Business Manager at Panasonic TOUGHBOOK. “TOUGHBOOK Secure provides a one-stop-shop for international defence partners to optimise military operations with Panasonic’s specialist mobile devices and end-to-end support before, during, and after deployments.”

The military-grade hardware is tested by independent laboratories to meet MIL-STD-810H standards for protection against drops, vibrations, extreme temperatures, and environmental factors such as sand, dust, and rain.
