MilDef’s 19”/2 small form factor rugged rack-mount IT platform has been developed to address the increasing demand for modularity in defense technology.

Aligned with the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA), the platform enables rapid field upgrades, low-risk integration, and long-term operational resilience. Each unit is built to deliver mission-specific adaptability through rugged construction, standardized interfaces, and capability-focused modules.
Adapting to a Changing Battlefield
The pace of technological advancement and shifting adversary tactics requires defense systems that can be reconfigured quickly. Equipment must support mission profiles such as command and control, perimeter defense, and signals intelligence, while minimizing cost and downtime. The MOSA directive from the Joint Chiefs of Staff reflects this requirement by calling for modular platforms that can be refreshed with ease.
The 19”/2 ecosystem is structured to meet these needs. Standardized form factors and industry-recognized connectors ensure multi-generation compatibility and simplify integration with hardware from across the defense sector. This reduces the risk of vendor lock and eliminates the need for complete system replacement when new technologies are introduced.
Addressing the Challenge of Rapid Advancement
Exponential growth in processing capability, as described by Moore’s Law, continues to influence defense technology cycles. Recent conflicts have shown how innovation drives new battlefield tactics, demanding systems that can be adapted at the edge.
Conventional all-in-one solutions often lead to full replacement when upgrades are required, raising the risk of incompatibility or dependence on a single supplier. A modular architecture, such as MilDef’s 19”/2 series, enables individual components to be exchanged while preserving the overall system. Specialized modules can be changed in the field, allowing mission parameters to be met with minimal disruption.
The 19”/2 Ecosystem
The 19”/2 product family includes computing units, routers, switches, and power distribution modules, all constructed in a half-rack (19-inch, 1U high) format. This consistent sizing allows units to be configured side by side, stacked, or integrated into crew stations, SAVE envelopes, and rack installations.
Connector flexibility is central to the design. The line supports MIL-Round, D38999, Fisher, LEMO, and RJ45 connectors, with copper or fiber interfaces available. This ensures compatibility with multiple vendor solutions and prevents system lock-in.
Each unit is ruggedized to MIL-STD specifications and operates as a standalone device without the need for additional protective enclosures. This reduces weight and increases reliability under demanding conditions.
The modular approach enables tailored configurations for specific operational requirements. A 19”/2 router can be paired with a radio to enable edge-to-command data transfer. A computing unit combined with an antenna can perform electromagnetic spectrum operations. Power distribution modules can supply conditioned output from field generators to forward-deployed systems.
Building Resilient, Flexible Systems
The 19”/2 product line reflects MilDef’s focus on creating resilient, adaptable solutions. Incremental technology refreshes lower upgrade costs and risks while ensuring systems remain aligned with mission demands.
Developed prior to the MOSA directive yet closely aligned with its objectives, the 19”/2 series provides a tested framework for building modular and interoperable systems designed to meet current and future defense requirements.
