U212 NFS submarine programme overview
The U212 NFS, or Near Future Submarine, is Italy’s next-generation conventional attack submarine programme for the Marina Militare. Fincantieri is the design authority, prime contractor and builder, with construction centred on the Muggiano shipyard near La Spezia and programme management entrusted to OCCAR.
The class is a substantial evolution of the Italian U212A/Todaro lineage rather than a simple repeat build. It retains the advantages of a compact, air-independent-propulsion submarine optimised for stealthy operations in the Mediterranean and wider NATO operating areas, while introducing greater Italian technological content, a new combat system, lithium-ion propulsion batteries and extensive platform modifications developed to Italian Navy requirements.
Development and construction status
The U212 NFS programme began with a contract for two submarines signed in 2021, with options for two additional units. The third boat was subsequently approved and the fourth was assigned to Fincantieri in 2024, bringing the programme to four submarines with associated integrated logistic support, in-service support and a training centre.
Fincantieri started production of the first submarine at Muggiano in January 2022, followed by the second in June 2023. The keel-laying of the first boat took place on 27 February 2026. As of July 2026, all four submarines are under construction, with deliveries planned from 2029 to 2032 following a contract amendment that accelerated the delivery of the fourth unit.
Design, propulsion and endurance
The U212 NFS has an overall length of 58.35m, a pressure-hull diameter of 7.00m and a surfaced displacement of about 1,550t ready to dive. Submerged displacement is approximately 1,750t. The hull form uses X-rudders and a seven-blade propeller, supporting manoeuvrability and acoustic discretion in littoral and open-ocean environments.
The propulsion plant combines a permanent-magnet electric propulsion motor, a 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine driving a synchronous generator, and a fuel-cell air-independent propulsion system. The new lithium-ion battery system replaces traditional lead-acid technology and is intended to increase submerged endurance, energy availability and operational flexibility. Fincantieri also identifies enhanced cooling for tropical operating conditions and electric masts among the platform changes from the earlier Italian U212A configuration.
Combat system, sensors and weapons
The combat system is centred on a fully integrated combat management architecture with 13 consoles, including steering, platform-control and command-and-control/sonar operator positions. Leonardo’s ATHENA MK2/U combat management system is associated with the U212 NFS and is designed to integrate submarine-specific sensor, tactical-picture and effector functions.
The sensor suite includes an extended flank array, cylindrical sonar array, obstacle-avoidance sonar, attack periscope, search optronic mast, communications masts, SHF mast, CESM/RESM electronic-support mast with electronic-warfare/direction-finding functions on the periscope, and navigation radar. Weapons are carried through six torpedo tubes, with capacity for 12 torpedoes: six loaded in the tubes and six in the weapon room. A 2026 programme amendment also adds WASS-developed underwater countermeasure systems to the class.
Operational role
The U212 NFS is intended to preserve and strengthen Italy’s undersea surveillance and control capability as the older Sauro-class submarines approach the end of their service lives. The boats will operate alongside the Italian Navy’s U212A submarines and support national, NATO and EU tasks.
Operational missions include intelligence gathering, undersea-domain awareness, deterrence, protection of sea lines of communication, security of energy and data infrastructure on the seabed, support to freedom of navigation, counter-terrorism, anti-piracy and broader maritime-security operations. The programme also serves a strategic industrial purpose by sustaining Italian submarine design, integration and production expertise within Fincantieri and the national supply chain.
