The R-73, developed by the Soviet Union’s Vympel Design Bureau and entering service in 1984, revolutionized short-range air-to-air missile technology. It became a standard weapon for several Soviet-era and modern Russian fighters, including the MiG-29, Su-27, Su-30, and their derivatives.   • R-73E: An export version with slightly reduced performance metrics.

  • R-74M: A mid-life upgrade of the R-73, featuring a more sensitive seeker, improved electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM), and extended range capabilities.
  • R-74M2: A further development with enhancements tailored for integration with fifth-generation fighters like the Su-57, offering increased compatibility with modern avionics and expanded engagement envelopes.
  • RVV-MD: An export-oriented modernization of the R-73M, incorporating additional seeker upgrades and range extensions to meet varied operational requirements.
  • RVV-MD2: The latest in the family, designed to deliver enhanced agility and resistance to countermeasures while supporting integration with a broader range of platforms.
