Bradley Fighting Vehicle overview

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) is a U.S. full-tracked, medium-armored fighting vehicle family manufactured and upgraded by BAE Systems Land & Armaments. It is used primarily by the U.S. Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams to move infantry and scouts under armor while providing suppressive fire, anti-armor capability and networked battlefield awareness.

The Bradley family includes the M2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the M3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle and specialist derivatives such as the M7 Bradley Fire Support Team vehicle. This profile focuses on the Bradley A4 standard, the current publicly described U.S. Army modernization and production configuration, while noting wider family roles where relevant.

Development and production

The Bradley entered U.S. Army service in the early 1980s as a tracked combat vehicle intended to operate with Abrams tanks in mechanized formations. BAE Systems, through its Land & Armaments business and predecessor organizations, now supports the platform’s production, reset, sustainment and modernization. Current A4 work generally converts legacy Bradley vehicles into upgraded M2A4 infantry and M7A4 fire-support configurations rather than representing an entirely new clean-sheet vehicle.

The U.S. Army began fielding the M2A4 to operational units in 2022 and has continued to place production and upgrade orders as part of its armored-vehicle modernization program. Recent A4 contracts have also supported replacement of Bradleys transferred from U.S. inventories to Ukraine. BAE Systems announced a further Bradley A4 upgrade order in November 2025, with work already underway and first vehicle deliveries planned by October 2026.

Design and protection

The Bradley uses a conventional tracked armored fighting vehicle layout with a front-mounted powerpack, a two-person turret, a driver at the front of the hull and a rear troop compartment accessed through a ramp. The M2A4 normally carries a three-person crew comprising commander, gunner and driver, plus up to seven dismounts depending on mission fit.

Survivability features vary by configuration and upgrade package, but the Bradley family uses an armored hull with appliqué protection, roof-fragmentation measures, automatic fire-suppression systems, smoke grenade launchers and provisions for additional armor kits. The A4 modernization improves survivability-related subsystems, including fire-suppression and electronic counter-IED components, while preserving the platform’s role as an armored transport and fighting vehicle rather than a main battle tank.

Armament and fire-control systems

The Bradley’s primary weapon is the M242 Bushmaster 25mm automatic cannon, a dual-feed chain gun used against light armor, personnel, fortified positions and other battlefield targets. A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun provides high-volume close-range fire, while a turret-mounted TOW anti-tank guided missile launcher gives the vehicle an organic capability against armored threats.

The A4 configuration retains the Bradley’s established weapon suite while improving digital processing and fire-control functions. The vehicle’s fire-control architecture supports ballistic computation, aided target tracking, automatic gun-target adjustment, automatic boresighting and hunter-killer engagement methods. These functions allow the commander and gunner to acquire, hand off and engage targets more efficiently while remaining under armor.

Mobility and powertrain

The Bradley A4 upgrade addresses one of the major challenges in the platform’s long service life: the cumulative weight and power demands added by protection, electronics and mission equipment upgrades. The A4 standard introduces a more powerful 675hp engine, upgraded drivetrain components, improved track and suspension elements, and increased electrical power generation.

BAE Systems lists the Bradley A4 with a combat weight of about 80,000lb, a maximum road speed of approximately 41mph and a cruising range of about 250 miles. The improved mobility package is intended to restore performance margin and allow the vehicle to keep pace with heavy armor in cross-country maneuver.

Mission systems and modernization path

The A4 standard incorporates digitized electronics, improved computing resources, enhanced diagnostics and network connectivity within the Armored Brigade Combat Team. These upgrades support better situational awareness, communications, maintenance troubleshooting and future insertion of additional mission systems.

The follow-on Bradley M2A4E1 represents the next modernization step rather than the baseline A4 vehicle. It adds an active protection system, an improved gunner’s sight and a more efficient air-conditioning system, reflecting battlefield lessons from recent conflicts and the growing requirement to protect armored vehicles against anti-tank guided weapons, rocket-propelled grenades and drones.

Operational role

The Bradley remains a central U.S. Army tracked combat platform for armored formations. In the M2 role, it transports infantry to the fight, supports dismounted troops with direct fire and suppresses enemy light armor and infantry positions. In M3 and fire-support configurations, the same basic chassis supports reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and artillery fire-support missions.

Although the U.S. Army is developing the XM30 as a future Bradley replacement, the A4 and A4E1 upgrades are intended to keep the existing fleet operationally relevant through the transition. The platform’s continued production, reset and upgrade activity underscore its importance as an enduring armored combat system for U.S. mechanized forces and selected partner operators.
