Al Zubarah Class Overview
The Al Zubarah class is a Fincantieri-designed multirole corvette class built for the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces. Also widely referred to as the Doha class, the design sits at the upper end of the corvette category, with dimensions, endurance and combat-system density closer to a light frigate. It was conceived to give Qatar a compact but heavily armed surface combatant able to conduct patrol, surveillance, sea-rescue, interdiction and combat missions in the Gulf and beyond.
Development and Delivery
The class was ordered by the Qatari Ministry of Defence as part of Qatar’s national naval acquisition program and was constructed at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. The lead ship, Al Zubarah, was delivered in October 2021, followed by the remaining units through 2023. The fourth and final vessel, Semaisma, was delivered in May 2023, completing the four-ship corvette element of the wider Qatari naval program.
Fincantieri designed the vessels in accordance with RINAMIL naval rules. The class reflects Qatar’s requirement for a ship able to operate as a patrol and security platform while also carrying a layered missile, gun and electronic-warfare fit for high-threat combat operations.
Design, Propulsion and Endurance
The Al Zubarah class has an overall length of 107.0m, a beam of 14.7m and a full-load displacement of about 3,250t. The hull form and machinery arrangement support sustained regional operations, with an endurance of 21 days and a range of more than 3,500 nautical miles at a 15kt cruising speed.
Propulsion is a combined diesel-and-diesel arrangement using four diesel engines driving two feathering controllable-pitch propellers through reduction gears. The class has a maximum continuous speed of 28kt. Accommodation is provided for a core crew of 98 plus 14 additional personnel, allowing mission specialists, aviation personnel or command staff to be embarked as required.
Combat Systems and Sensors
The corvettes are fitted with an integrated combat-management and sensor suite centered on multifunction radar, identification friend-or-foe equipment, electronic-support measures, infrared search-and-track equipment, radar and electro-optical fire-control systems, and underwater sensors. The reported combat-system architecture includes Leonardo’s Athena combat management system, Kronos multifunction radar and Thesan mine-avoidance sonar.
Fincantieri lists the class with tactical data links including Link 11, Link 16, JREAP and national or customer-specific links, with Link 22 fitted for. Satellite communications and an integrated communications system support networked operations with shore-based command nodes and other Qatari naval assets.
Armament and Defensive Capability
The Al Zubarah class carries a weapon fit unusually heavy for its displacement. The main gun is a Leonardo 76/62mm Super Rapid multi-feeding naval gun, supplemented by two 30mm secondary guns for close surface defense. For anti-air warfare, the ships are fitted with a 16-cell Sylver A-50 vertical launch system for Aster 30 Block 1 surface-to-air missiles and a 21-cell Mk 49 Rolling Airframe Missile launcher for point defense.
Anti-surface warfare capability is provided by two quad launchers for MM40 Exocet Block III anti-ship missiles. The defensive suite also includes electronic-warfare equipment, radar electronic countermeasures, anti-air-warfare decoy launchers and anti-submarine-warfare decoy systems. In networked service, the class forms a key element of Qatar’s maritime air-defense architecture.
Aviation, Boats and Operational Role
The flight deck and hangar are sized for an NH90 naval helicopter, extending the ship’s surveillance, utility and maritime-security reach. The class can also deploy and recover high-speed rigid-hull inflatable boats using side cranes and a stern ramp, supporting boarding, interception, rescue and patrol operations.
By combining a compact hull, 21-day endurance, helicopter facilities and a layered missile armament, the Al Zubarah class gives the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces a modern surface combatant suited to territorial defense, protection of maritime infrastructure, escort duties and broader Gulf security missions.
