The Republic of Korea Armed Forces has selected Hanwha Aerospace’s Arion-SMET Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) in what is thought to be the first acquisition program of its kind in the military’s history.

The selection was made as part of the Army TIGER modernization initiative, which aims to enhance the autonomous capabilities of the Republic of Korea Army. Designed to support mission execution, the platform is intended to improve operational effectiveness while reducing physical risks to individual soldiers.

The Arion-SMET is a multi-role uncrewed ground system with capabilities spanning autonomous navigation and follow-me operation, logistics resupply and cargo transport, reconnaissance and surveillance, casualty evacuation, and integration with remote weapon stations.

Before its selection, the platform underwent a series of field trials and operational evaluations both in the Republic of Korea and internationally to demonstrate its performance under real-world conditions.

The decision confirms the technological maturity of autonomous systems developed within the Hanwha Group and recognizes Hanwha Aerospace’s continued efforts to advance next-generation technologies expected to shape future military capabilities.
