To satisfy the Swedish Armed Forces need for electric power supply to its Sikorsky Black Hawk and NHIndustries NH90 helicopters, the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) has awarded a contract to W5 Solutions for the supply of helicopter Ground Power Units (GPU).

The helicopter GPU output rating is 50kVA and the system is adapted to the helicopter specific needs. In addition to fulfilling tough requirements on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), power quality and operational environment, the GPU is also completely mobile. Delivered on a trailer, the helicopter ground power unit can easily be towed and the design ensures easy loading onto a transport aircraft, such as Lockheed C-130. With its built-in diesel engine, the GPU is completely self-supplying.

“We are very proud to deliver this project to FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces, says Daniel Hopstadius, CEO of W5 Solutions. We have previously delivered portable GPUs to the Swedish Armed Forces, used for the smaller helicopter 15 (Leonardo AW109) and with this project we will expand our power supply product portfolio. This is a long-term commitment from us, providing products development and design services through to verification and delivery inclusive of system safety analysis, technical documentation and project management.”
