Accelerate Defense Modernization through Strategic Sourcing
Discover cutting-edge solutions from leading global suppliers
Rheinmetall Defence Australia and Australian technology company Praetorian Aeronautics have delivered a working prototype of a containerized Counter-Uncrewed Aircraft System (C-UAS), progressing from concept to prototype within 12 months.
The collaborative research and development partnership has produced the Autonomous-Engagement-Rapid-Interceptor-Effector (AERIE), designed to address the growing threat posed by low-cost drones and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). Developed as an interceptor-agnostic, self-sustained and deployable launcher, AERIE can accommodate more than 20 interceptors and packs into a standard 20ft ISO shipping container. The system is designed for rapid deployment and reloading.
The demonstrator incorporates Praetorian Aeronautics’ Arrow Interceptor and Hadrian Command and Control (C2) system, both designed and developed in Australia.
Arrow is an autonomous, high-speed, low-cost interceptor designed for the kinetic neutralization of multiple uncrewed system threat types beyond visual range. Hadrian C2 is an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enhanced system designed to manage autonomous effectors across air, land and maritime domains.
Nathan Poyner, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia, highlighted the partnership’s contribution to Australian sovereign capability, commenting, “Rheinmetall has a long and proud history of transferring technology and forging alliances with partners around the world. Our work with Praetorian Aeronatics continues this focus and has delivered a working concept of advanced C-UAS using Australian ingenuity with global air defence engineering and manufacturing know-how.”
Brett Hill, Chief Executive Officer of Praetorian Aeronautics, spoke about the combination of the companies’ respective technologies and capabilities, adding, “Praetorian Aeronatics has been developing cutting edge systems for more than three years. Our partnership with Rheinmetall brings together our unique AI-enhanced C2 system and Arrow Interceptor with Rheinmetall’s engineering systems and production capability. Together, we have delivered an Australian air defence solution for emerging global threats.”
The AERIE system is scheduled to progress to full operator demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2026.
