Defense technology company Skapion has unveiled what it describes as the world’s first native counter-swarm defense system, built from the ground up to detect, engage, and defeat large-scale, coordinated drone attacks at an affordable cost.

The announcement follows a $36 million Seed funding round led by UP. Partners and Khosla Ventures to accelerate the development and validation of the platform. The investment comes as militaries confront the limitations of conventional counter-unmanned aerial systems (counter-UAS) amid expanding drone swarm scale, speed, and sophistication. Most legacy air-defense systems were designed to engage individual or limited quantities of aerial threats, leaving them vulnerable to capacity and budget exhaustion during mass saturation attacks, such as those observed in recent conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

To counter these operational bottlenecks, Skapion engineered the system around a native many-to-many architecture that allows multiple interceptors to engage multiple incoming targets simultaneously at scale. The platform was designed by Skapion’s Founding Architect, General (ret.) Pini Yungman, who previously served as the GM of Rafael Air & Missile Defense and architect of the Iron Dome system.

The highly mobile, fully kinetic system is specified to engage more than 100 targets simultaneously while delivering an interception rate exceeding 97 percent. Designed to provide an economically sustainable defense layer against low-cost mass threats, it operates at a significantly lower cost per interception than conventional air-defense equipment. The interceptors utilize a vertical-launch configuration for 360-degree coverage, and the overall platform is adaptable for ground, airborne, and maritime deployments. Its kinetic mechanism is purpose-built to defeat autonomous and communication-independent threats that are immune to electronic disruption.

At the core of the platform is an AI-native command-and-control (C2) architecture capable of ingesting and fusing threat data from Skapion’s own detection and tracking sensors as well as external systems. The C2 software evaluates and prioritizes incoming targets, assigns interceptors, and executes engagements in real time. Depending on operational requirements, the platform can function under complete end-to-end autonomy or with a single human operator on the loop. Because the open architecture is sensor-agnostic, the system can integrate with existing C2 networks, external threat intelligence, and complementary counter-UAS platforms, allowing it to operate either as a standalone air-defense battery for maneuver units and critical infrastructure, or as a gap-filling layer in a national air-defense grid.

“The next generation of threats cannot be defeated by simply stacking yesterday’s air-defense solutions,” said Ido Bar-On, Co-founder and CEO of Skapion. “A swarm is not just a larger number of discrete drones. It changes the dynamics of the engagement, the number of simultaneous decisions, the speed at which they must be made and the economies of every interception. Native Counter-Swarm means designing the entire system from day one for simultaneous mass engagement.”
