Defense technology startup Mara’s $7 million pre-seed funding round, led by Khosla Ventures, will bring Mara’s Spike counter-unmanned aerial system platform from field testing to broad combat deployment.
The round also included participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund, Indicator Fund, and angel investors. Small, inexpensive first-person view (FPV) drones costing a few hundred dollars have become a primary cause of combat casualties, capable of disabling multi-million-dollar vehicles and critical civilian infrastructure. Traditional counter-drone defenses rely on centralized guns, lasers, or semi-piloted interceptors focused on a single sensor cone. These legacy architectures struggle when targeted by multiple low-altitude FPV drones employing swarm tactics, fiber-optic control links, or autonomous onboard guidance to bypass electronic jamming.
Mara addresses this threat by deploying a distributed, autonomous, and omnidirectional defense architecture. The Spike platform utilizes a network of stationary targeting sensors paired with a magazine of mini-interceptors to deliver 360-degree hemispherical coverage capable of engaging dozens of simultaneous targets.
“Small drones changed the battlefield because they distributed the cost and capability of precise attack,” said Daniel Kofman, Co-Founder and CEO of Mara. “Most defenses still concentrate both replacement cost and line of fire. Spike instead creates a distributed mesh of small, cheap nodes that can each aim and shoot in multiple directions at once.”
The platform comprises two main modular components: Spotter and Seeker. Spotter is a stationary targeting node integrating visual, acoustic, and optional radar sensors with in-house AI for day, night, and all-weather detection. Seeker is a fast, 250-gram, tube-launched kinetic interceptor reaching speeds up to 200 km/h with onboard intelligence. Spotter can pass launch orders to Seeker autonomously, while keeping a human on the loop to set rules of engagement and abort launches when necessary. Form factors range from rucksack-portable squad setups to vehicle mounts and fixed perimeter configurations.
Spike’s underlying hardware and software have already progressed through live military testing. Seeker completed intercept trials cued by U.S. Army software in Texas, while Spotter operated hands-free on an armored vehicle during exercises in Europe. End-to-end autonomous target detection and intercept cueing were validated with a U.S. special operations unit, and Ukrainian forces recently operated Spotter 40 kilometers from the front line to track active FPV threats.
“Mara has moved rapidly from proof-of-concept to user testing for an autonomous system,” said Nicole Fraenkel, Partner at Khosla Ventures. “What caught my eye is that they’re building counter-drone autonomy with a system cost that’s orders of magnitude lower than anything else we’ve seen.”
Mara was founded in October 2024 by Daniel Kofman and Sriram Raghu, who previously built dorm-room tactical FPV prototypes for a DHS program and co-founded solar technology firm Optivolt. In addition to defense testing agreements with three U.S. defense organizations and selection for NATO’s DIANA accelerator, Mara is piloting Spike at a South Korean port. The company aims to deploy ground-mounted Spike systems to key operational customers by the end of 2026, with vehicle-mounted and man-portable variants entering production in 2027.
