Rugged Tablets
Discover cutting-edge solutions from leading global suppliers
Durabook, the rugged mobile solutions brand owned by Twinhead International Corporation, has announced the R12 Rugged Tablet, an active edge computing platform designed to handle demanding processing tasks in the field.
Powered by the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor, the platform targets industrial, defense, and public safety teams operating in vehicle-mounted setups or remote outdoor settings where network access is intermittent. The R12 delivers 180 TOPS of integrated artificial intelligence performance to run real-time inference and process incoming feeds from cameras and sensors directly at the edge. For compute-intensive software, users can configure the device with an optional discrete GPU providing 232 TOPS, bringing total system capability up to 412 TOPS. Durabook also offers optional dedicated NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada graphics to support visual workflows such as architectural visualization and digital content creation.
“Rugged, powerful, and mission-ready, this Durabook tablet is taking its rightful place supporting AI at the edge for professionals in the field,” said Twinhead CEO Fred Kao. “The R12 Rugged Tablet enables a clearer view of information in mobile, space-constrained, or disconnected environments.”
To support data visualization, the tablet features a 12.2-inch DynaVue sunlight-readable display delivering up to 1,200 nits of brightness. Despite offering a larger workspace for viewing maps, imagery, and complex sensor outputs, the unit is housed in a chassis smaller than conventional 11.6-inch tablets. When paired with a detachable backlit keyboard, the R12 lets users transition between touch-based field work and tasks that benefit from a physical keyboard.
Field workflows frequently require local processing of 4K video and 8K content without cloud dependency. To accommodate high-throughput equipment and local networks, the R12 provides an array of physical and wireless interfaces, including high-speed 2.5GbE LAN, Thunderbolt 4, USB, and 4G/5G cellular connectivity, along with an option for up to two RJ-45 ports. For data protection and system integrity, the platform includes a Windows 11 Secured-core PC configuration, TPM 2.0 as standard, a quick-release SSD, a fingerprint scanner, a 13 MP rear camera with dynamic shutter design, and a 5.0 MP infrared camera supporting Windows Hello facial authentication.
To minimize operational downtime during extended deployments, the device incorporates a dual removable battery design with optional hot-swappable, high-capacity technology, providing an extended battery life of up to 20 hours. The chassis is engineered to withstand harsh physical conditions, meeting IP66 sealing against dust and water ingress, MIL-STD-810H standards with 6-foot drop protection, and MIL-STD-461G electromagnetic compatibility. The platform is also certified under ANSI/UL C1D2 for operation in specified hazardous environments, including oil and gas, petrochemical manufacturing, and other industrial settings with potentially explosive atmospheres.
