The XChange3031 from developer Extreme Engineering Solutions (X-ES) is a rugged, conduction-cooled 3U VPX Ethernet switch built for high-throughput embedded networking in military and aerospace systems.
Designed to support demanding C4I and C4ISR applications, it delivers non-blocking, full wire-speed performance and supports both Layer 2 switching and optional Layer 3 routing when integrated with the XChange6300 Embedded Services Router running Cisco IOS-XE®.
Flexible High-Speed Connectivity
The XChange3031 features a versatile port configuration that enables it to serve as the backbone of complex embedded systems. It includes one 40GBASE-KR4 Ethernet port, which can be configured as four 10GBASE-KR or four 1000BASE-X ports.
The switch also provides six 10GBASE-KR ports, each of which can be individually configured as 1000BASE-X, along with four 10GBASE-T ports and up to eight 1000BASE-T ports via the backplane. Additional configurations are available based on mezzanine options—refer to the block diagram for specific port mapping.
When integrated with the optional XChange6300, the system supports one 2500BASE-X and two 1000BASE-X Ethernet ports from J16, as well as up to two 1000BASE-T ports from J14 routed to either P2 or the switch. An RS-232 serial port is also available through J16 and routed to P1.
Advanced Protocol Support & Network Management
The XChange3031 is a fully managed Layer 2 switch that supports a broad range of IEEE and IETF protocols, making it suitable for diverse networking topologies.
Features include VLANs (802.1Q), Link Aggregation (LACP), Spanning Tree Protocols (STP, RSTP, MSTP, PVRST), port authentication (802.1x), port mirroring, flow control, ACLs, IGMP, LLDP, and Quality of Service (QoS). The switch also supports IPv4 and IPv6, jumbo frames up to 10 kB, and IEEE 1588v2 transparent clocking for precise time synchronization.
Network management can be performed via Command Line Interface (CLI) or SNMP, and the switch includes SSH server support for secure access. A 4 MB packet buffer ensures efficient handling of high data loads.
Physical & Environmental Specifications
The XChange3031 is built to withstand extreme conditions and meets ruggedization Level 5 as defined in the X-ES Ruggedization Chart. It conforms to the 3U VPX form factor, with dimensions of 100 mm x 160 mm, and is available in 0.8 in. or 1.0 in. pitch. The switch is compliant with the Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation (REDI) per VITA 48, and optionally with the VITA 48.2 Type 1, Two-Level Maintenance (2LM) standard.
An optional XMC site is available for additional expansion on configurations with an integrated mezzanine card. The switch also supports the VITA 46.11 Tier 1 and Tier 2 Intelligent Platform Management Controller (IPMC) for system health monitoring—availability varies by configuration and should be confirmed with X-ES.
Conformal coating is offered as an option to enhance environmental resistance. Power requirements are configuration-dependent; customers should consult X-ES to select the appropriate board configuration for their specific operating conditions.
