Connectors, Cables and Optical Fibers - Overview

Used in military, defence and aerospace applications, military Connectors are:

  • Rugged
  • Easy to blind mate
  • Sealed and hermetic up to IP68 (even when unmated),
  • Resistant to extreme temperatures, dust and sand,
  • Feature EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding

Electrical cable used in military applications such as power, control and instrumentation, data transmission and communications, exhibits exceedingly high levels of performance as well as flexibility, cut-through resistance and abrasion resistance. Aerospace and marine environments cables must also adhere to strict weight restrictions.

Advantages of optical fiber over coaxial cables include:

  • Ruggedized fiber optic cable is more robust than coaxial cable
  • Fiber optic cable enables higher bandwidth enhanced for applications that require multiplexed voice, data and video signals
  • Fiber optic cable can typically weigh five times less than coaxial cable of the equivalent length
  • Optical fibers are not affected by EMI or RFI (radio-frequency interference) which makes them difficult to tap which, in turn, reduces the need for encryption
  • Fiber optic cable only needs them every 16km as opposed to coaxial cable where repeaters must be installed every 500 metres
