The Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) consist of the Land Forces, Navy, Air Force, and the paramilitary Defence League. As of 2021, the EDF maintains approximately 6,500 active-duty personnel, supplemented by a robust reserve force and the volunteer-based Defence League, which comprises about 10,000 members. This structure enables rapid mobilization and flexibility in response to security challenges.

Demographics and Economic Indicators

Estonia has a population of approximately 1.3 million people and covers a land area of 45,227 square kilometers. In 2022, the defense budget was around $810 million, accounting for 2.3% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In response to regional security concerns, Estonia has committed to increasing its defense spending, with projections indicating an allocation exceeding 3% of GDP in 2024.

Land Forces

The Estonian Land Forces are equipped with a mix of modern and legacy systems. Key assets include the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers, CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, and Javelin anti-tank missile systems. Estonia has also acquired U.S.-made M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to enhance its long-range precision strike capabilities. These acquisitions are part of a broader modernization effort to bolster the nation’s defense posture.

Navy

The Estonian Navy focuses on mine countermeasures and ensuring maritime security in the Baltic Sea. Its fleet includes Sandown-class minehunters and various patrol vessels. The Navy collaborates closely with NATO allies to maintain regional maritime security and participates in joint exercises to enhance interoperability.

Air Force

The Estonian Air Force operates a limited number of aircraft, primarily for transport, surveillance, and training purposes. While Estonia does not maintain its own fighter jet fleet, it relies on NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, with allied aircraft rotating to provide air defense. To strengthen its air surveillance capabilities, Estonia has invested in advanced radar systems and is exploring the acquisition of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance missions.

Defence Modernization Initiatives

In light of increased regional tensions, Estonia has embarked on significant defense modernization programs. The government has allocated substantial funds for the procurement of advanced weaponry, infrastructure development, and the enhancement of cyber defense capabilities. Notably, Estonia is constructing new military bases and fortifications along its eastern border to deter potential aggression. Additionally, the EDF is focusing on improving rapid mobilization processes and increasing the readiness of its reserve forces.
