The MQ-9B STOL is an advanced Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) variant of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).

Developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), it integrates a new wing and tail kit inspired by the Mojave UAV, allowing it to operate from expeditionary bases and big-deck amphibious vessels. This capability enables MQ-9B STOL to support multi-domain surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, fleet defense, and ISR missions without requiring a conventional airfield for refueling and maintenance.

Overview

The MQ-9B STOL enhances the proven MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian platforms with a groundbreaking short takeoff and landing capability. By incorporating a STOL wing and tail kit, it allows operations from shorter, less-prepared runways and amphibious ships, dramatically expanding its deployment flexibility for land and naval forces.

This upgrade ensures the MQ-9B STOL can remain closer to operational areas, increasing mission endurance and responsiveness. Despite its new STOL configuration, the aircraft retains the ability to conduct complex, long-endurance missions while utilizing advanced multi-domain surveillance and podded technologies.

One of the most significant advantages of MQ-9B STOL is its ability to conduct organic anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and fleet defense missions without requiring a return to a traditional land-based airfield. This capability extends operational reach and reduces downtime, making MQ-9B STOL a critical asset for both expeditionary and maritime operations.

Key Features and Capabilities

Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) Capability

The MQ-9B STOL incorporates a new wing and tail kit, inspired by the Mojave UAV, to enable:

  • Operations from expeditionary airstrips and big-deck amphibious vessels.
  • Increased operational presence in forward-deployed areas.
  • Reduced dependency on long, conventional airfields.

Advanced Multi-Domain Surveillance & ISR

Equipped with state-of-the-art sensor technology, the MQ-9B STOL provides real-time intelligence gathering and long-range surveillance for joint forces and civil authorities. Key features include:

  • Lynx® Multi-mode Radar for high-resolution imaging.
  • 360-degree wide-area maritime radar for persistent sea-based surveillance.
  • Automatic Identification System (AIS) for tracking and classifying vessels.
  • Electronic Support Measures (ESM) for electronic warfare and signals intelligence.

Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) & Fleet Defense

MQ-9B STOL enhances maritime security and naval operations by integrating:

  • A dedicated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) system, enabling persistent underwater threat detection.
  • Sonobuoy dispensing and monitoring capabilities, allowing remote ASW execution.
  • Fleet defense capabilities, ensuring persistent surveillance and force protection.

By enabling onboard ASW and fleet defense without reliance on land-based refueling, MQ-9B STOL significantly enhances naval operational reach and responsiveness.

All-Weather & Long-Endurance Performance

MQ-9B STOL is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and remain operational in challenging environments. It features:

  • Lightning protection and de-ice/anti-ice systems for reliable operation in all weather conditions.
  • A fatigue- and damage-tolerant airframe, ensuring a 40,000-hour service life.
  • Automatic takeoff and landing capability, adaptable for land-based and shipboard operations.

Networked and Modular Payload Integration

MQ-9B STOL supports seamless integration of mission-specific payloads, offering flexibility across multiple domains. It also features:

  • Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) / Dual SATCOM command and control, ensuring global operational connectivity.
  • Detect and Avoid System (TCAS, ADS-B, Due Regard Radar) for safe integration into controlled airspace.
  • An open and modular mission management system, allowing rapid payload reconfiguration.
