Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions Division has introduced the PacStar® 452 server, featuring support for 4x E1.S NVMe drives to deliver additional high-speed storage in tactical edge applications.

In addition to its faster, more rugged E1.S storage devices, the PacStar 452 supports Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) for remote management. When combined with Curtiss-Wright’s IQ-Core® Software network management tools, this 2-slot Intel® Xeon® processor-based module, available in 4/8/10-core variants, delivers maximum visibility into battlefield server operations and management.

Use of the PacStar 452 speeds the deployment of applications at the edge and ensures access to advanced technology at the tactical edge, even in disconnected, intermittent and limited (DIL) environments. It’s ideal for use in edge computing applications that require large amounts of data storage, including in-theater computing and remote or forward operating base deployments for military, Homeland Security, first responders, and commercial/enterprise users.

The high-performance computing and network virtualization PacStar 452 platform supports four E1.S NVMe drives that feature secure storage and enhanced thermal management. Their faster performance at higher operational temperatures eliminates the need for processor throttling.

Each E1.S drives provides 4TB of data storage, for a total of 16TB. 8TB versions are expected to become available in the near future and will double maximum storage to 32TB. The module’s built-in IPMI support enables users to remotely set up and manage their tactical server hardware to greatly speed ease of use and deployment.

Because IPMI allows media resources, such as DVDs, USB drives, and ISO files, to be accessed over IP networks using a remote keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM), it eliminates the need to lug additional equipment or to have an operator physically present.

The PacStar 452 is ideal for hosting software applications or virtual appliances in a quick-setup, compact and rugged form factor. It is available with a wide variety of pre-loaded, pre-secured, and pre-qualified software applications or virtualized appliances appropriate for use in tactical C5ISR/EW applications. These include cutting-edge technologies from Aruba Networks, Cisco, Forcepoint, Haivision, Information Security Corp, Juniper, Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks, Rancher Government Systems, RedHat, VMware, and more.

Capable of hosting a vast array of applications, virtualized network functions, storage, analytic and cybersecurity technologies, the PacStar 452 server module delivers industry-leading performance in a 5.4 lb., MIL-STD tested platform for flyaway, command post, ground vehicle, and aircraft applications.

The module can run standalone for rugged workstation applications paired with a rugged display. It can also be rapidly integrated into a larger PacStar 400-Series based packaging solution, with support for up to nine PacStar 400-Series modules in a 4RU form factor, by utilizing the PacStar Smart Chassis. The PacStar Smart Chassis supports a wide range of transportation and mounting options and can mount alongside other chassis from the PacStar product line, including the PacStar VPX Smart Chassis.

Additional system packaging options for PacStar 400-Series modules include briefcase, transit case, rack mount, vehicle mount, and backpack transport.

Brian Perry, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions Division, commented, “We are proud to bring the high-speed, thermally optimized ruggedization benefits of E1.S storage devices to tactical edge processing applications.

“For customers seeking high-performance, rugged solutions to support system hyperconvergence and edge-to-cloud connectivity on the move, our new PacStar 452 server delivers industry-leading server capabilities with support for remote network management. It represents our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest-performance compute and networking solutions at the tactical edge of the battlefield.”
