The Storm Shadow, known as SCALP EG in French service, is a long-range, air-launched cruise missile designed for precision strike missions against high-value targets. Developed by MBDA, the missile serves various NATO and allied nations, including the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. It is compatible with multiple aircraft platforms, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and Panavia Tornado.

The missile has a modular design and features stealth characteristics, enabling penetration of dense air defenses. Equipped with advanced navigation and guidance systems, the Storm Shadow is designed to minimize collateral damage while achieving high mission success rates.

Storm Shadow / SCALP EG Design and Features

Storm Shadow is powered by a turbojet engine, which provides it with a range exceeding 250 kilometers (155 miles). Its stealthy airframe incorporates low-observable technologies, ensuring reduced radar cross-section. The missile has a tandem warhead configuration, comprising a shaped charge for initial penetration and a secondary high-explosive charge for enhanced lethality.

Performance

Its subsonic speed enhances fuel efficiency, while its terrain-hugging flight path minimizes detection risks. The warhead’s dual-charge mechanism ensures effectiveness against both structural and soft targets.
