The German Armed Forces has commissioned Rheinmetall to supply a third delivery lot of 50,000 communication headsets with integrated hearing protection.

This latest call-off, finalized in December 2025, originates from a framework contract awarded in April 2024. The contract, which spans seven years, allows for the delivery of up to 191,000 sets and carries a potential total volume of approximately €400 million net. While the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee initially restricted orders to 60,000 sets for the 2024 and 2025 period, this new order brings the total net value of equipment requested under the framework to date to approximately €280 million.

The equipment, known in German as “Sprechsatz mit Gehörschutzfunktion” or SmG, is a critical component of individual soldier gear. Each set features modern active ear defenders designed to dampen harmful impulse noise while simultaneously amplifying quiet environmental sounds. The system includes a microphone and connectivity options for various radio devices, facilitating seamless voice communication in high-noise environments.

The scope of delivery for this project extends beyond the headsets to include various push-to-talk buttons and optional cable sets. These components allow the systems to interface with different radio devices and on-board communication systems. Rheinmetall is utilizing two specialist subcontractors for the project: 3M Peltor is providing the ComTac VIII headset, while CEOTRONICS AG is supplying CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C units, as well as wireless push-to-talk buttons and cabling.

The SmG system is designed for compatibility with the new combat helmet currently supplied by Rheinmetall, as well as other helmet types utilized by German forces. The first two delivery lots of this equipment are expected to be fully delivered by the end of 2025.

As the prime contractor for the Future Soldier System – Advanced System, Rheinmetall continues to manage several configurations of its Gladius soldier system for both domestic and international markets. This latest order further reinforces the company’s position as a primary supplier of integrated technology for modern infantry operations.
