Semi Conductor Devices (SCD), a provider of cooled and uncooled infrared detectors and high-power laser diodes, has secured a significant new order for its Crane mid-wave infrared (MWIR) detector.

The company received an order for hundreds of units of the Crane 5M/5µm format MWIR detector, set for integration into missile warning systems (MWS) for airborne applications.

Crane MWIR Detectors Set for Airborne Missile Warning Systems

The Crane detector offers enhanced capabilities for airborne self-protection suites, enabling precise detection and identification of threats at extended ranges. The device combines a 5-megapixel resolution in a 2560×2048 format with a 5μm pixel pitch.

Based on SCD’s established XBn technology and Hot Full Midwave (HFM), the Crane operates efficiently at 150K or 120K, delivering superior image quality while maintaining compact size, weight, and power (SWaP) consumption.

The Crane’s high sensitivity, characterized by low readout noise, low dark current, and high quantum efficiency, allows for superior performance in challenging environmental conditions.

The detector’s frame rates of up to 140 Hz in full frame provide smooth and detailed imagery even in dynamic scenarios, crucial for tracking fast-moving threats. Additionally, its compact integrated detector dewar cooler assembly (IDDCA) contributes to a low SWaP profile, making it ideal for integration into various airborne platforms.

Shai Fishbein, VP of Business Development & Marketing at SCD, commented, “This order underscores the growing demand for advanced MWIR technology in airborne self-protection systems. The Crane’s unique combination of high resolution and low SWaP characteristics enables our customers to achieve superior threat detection and tracking capabilities.

“This significantly enhances aircraft survivability by providing unparalleled situational awareness and early threat detection, allowing aircrews to respond with greater precision and effectiveness in complex operational environments. As global threats are constantly increasing, our leading IR solutions, ranging from high-end to mass distribution units, are drawing significant interest worldwide.”
