Volatus Aerospace is advancing its partnership with Dufour Aerospace to develop runway-independent cargo capabilities designed for Arctic, defense, and commercial operations.
The collaboration, which began in February 2025, has moved from initial alignment toward active capability development with a primary focus on operational readiness. The initiative centers on adapting Dufour’s hybrid eVTOL aircraft into a medium-payload cargo solution capable of operating in austere and infrastructure-limited environments. By removing the requirement for traditional runways, the platform aims to provide resilient logistics for remote regions where access is often restricted by geography or lack of established facilities.
To support this development, a dedicated flight simulator has been installed at the Volatus facility in Toronto. This hardware serves as a foundation for training Volatus pilots and establishing a platform for customer evaluation. Beyond pilot instruction, the simulator allows for mission rehearsal and the creation of operational concepts, helping to integrate the hybrid aircraft into broader commercial and government service offerings.
The project is currently focused on three specific sectors. In Arctic and remote operations, the partners are leveraging experience in cold-weather environments to adapt the platform for northern regions. For military and government logistics, the focus is on resupply missions in areas where runway access is unavailable. Finally, the companies are assessing commercial utility in emergency response and critical infrastructure support for remote industrial sites.
Glen Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Volatus Aerospace, commented, “The focus of our work with Dufour Aerospace is on building operational capability, not promoting individual performance metrics. Governments and commercial operators alike are increasingly looking for reliable, runway-independent cargo solutions that can operate in remote and challenging environments. This partnership allows us to apply our operational, regulatory, and training expertise to help shape such a capability.”
Based in Toronto, Volatus Aerospace provides dual-use crewed and uncrewed systems alongside aerial intelligence for public-sector and commercial clients. This partnership allows the company to apply its regulatory and technical expertise to mature the hybrid eVTOL platform for practical use.
Sascha Hardegger, Chief Executive Officer of Dufour Aerospace, added, “Working with Volatus provides valuable operational insight as we continue to mature our hybrid eVTOL platform. The partnership supports the development of practical, deployable logistics solutions that address both government and commercial requirements.”
While the simulator and training programs are currently active, Volatus noted that the partnership remains in the evaluation and capability development phase. Future decisions regarding manufacturing participation or full-scale operational deployment remain subject to further assessments and regulatory approvals.
