Accelerate Defense Modernization through Strategic Sourcing
Discover cutting-edge solutions from leading global suppliers
UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) is running a Market Engagement activity on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), seeking novel solutions to detect and defeat fiber optically controlled uncrewed aerial systems.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the rapid evolution of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), including the emergence of platforms controlled via trailing fiber optic cables. These systems are immune to conventional radio frequency countermeasures, presenting a significant operational challenge.
In response, the MOD is seeking innovative and potentially repurposed capabilities to detect, track, identify, and defeat fiber optically controlled UAS. Proposed solutions should integrate into a layered, open-architecture system approach, such as SAPIENT, the MOD’s common data standard. Submissions are expected to demonstrate clear tactical benefits, including improved lethality, reduced engagement timelines, and enhanced cost effectiveness.
Consideration should also be given to future adversary adaptation. Solutions may be designed for both fixed-site protection and deployment by mobile tactical users operating in forward frontline environments.
This activity is focused specifically on detecting and defeating fiber optically controlled UAS. While other MOD programs address broader counter-UAS challenges, this initiative is intended to explore targeted approaches to this emerging threat. Industry feedback is also encouraged regarding feasibility, viability, and tactical utility.
The scope does not include wider counter-UAS approaches that are agnostic to fiber optic control, such as operator protection or purely kinetic defeat methods. However, integrated capabilities that incorporate supporting counter-UAS elements may be relevant. For example, acoustic detection of a UAS followed by disruption or defeat of its fiber optic control link.
Responses to the Market Engagement must be submitted via the UKDI submission service, which requires registration. Access is recommended via a Google Chrome browser.
Submissions should outline the proposed innovation, including how it meets the stated requirements. Details should also be provided on the maturity of the solution, including whether it is currently deployed, its development status, and any dependencies on third-party delivery or supply chains. Information on scalability is required, including production capacity and the ability to deliver at scale within defined timeframes, as well as any support requirements from primes or innovation partners.
Respondents should also detail any prior engagement with government, defence, or security organizations, including relevant teams and the level of exposure to the proposed innovation, where appropriate. Confirmation of company nationality is required, including UK registration status and whether the supply chain is UK-based.
Submissions must be received by 12:00 PM BST on 21 April 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Each submission should focus on a single product or capability. Organizations with multiple solutions are required to submit separate entries for each.
Guidance notes provided via the submission portal are generic. Sections relating specifically to competition proposal submissions are not applicable to this Market Engagement and should be disregarded.
