The UK Ministry of Defence has selected Persistent Systems’ Wave Relay® Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) system to support the British Army’s Project CAIN modernization effort.

This multi-million dollar contract involves the delivery of MPU5 tactical MANET radios, Rugged Display & Controllers (RDCs), and associated Dismount Kit equipment. The hardware will be fielded by the 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team, which serves as the UK’s rapidly deployable, first-to-fight airborne formation. The program will be delivered through Persistent’s UK partner and authorized distributor, Steatite Ltd.

The program will also employ Cloud Relay™ technology. This global networking capability allows soldiers to maintain uninterrupted communications while transitioning between different transport layers, including SATCOM, LTE, and 5G. This ensures resilient connectivity for troops operating in complex, contested, and highly mobile environments.

Eve Shapiro, Senior Director of Sales and Business Development at Persistent Systems, commented, “By deploying the MPU5 and Cloud Relay™, the 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team will gain a significant advantage in decision-making and coordination across dispersed, multi-domain operations. We’ve seen exceptional results with the UK Royal Marines, and we expect similar success as more organizations recognize the operational impact of a resilient, edge-to-cloud network.”

The selection builds on the UK’s broader modernization efforts. In 2024, the UK Royal Marines fielded more than 2,000 MPU5 devices as part of their transformation into an agile, technology-enabled Commando Force. This latest step further strengthens the UK’s ability to operate with speed, precision, and interoperability alongside international allies.

The adoption of the MPU5 is part of a broader trend in military modernization across Europe and the globe. Persistent Systems, a leader in secure MANET technology, is currently supporting initiatives such as the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) efforts, maritime security in the Baltic region, and various partner networks in the Indo-Pacific.

The growing demand for scalable, resilient networking capabilities has led to increased deployments of these systems in Spain, France, and the Baltics. These modernizations reflect a requirement for secure, adaptable, and globally connected networks that maintain situational awareness in dynamic environments.
