The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has placed a significant SEK 2.6 billion order with Saab for a mobile and modular Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS).
The contract covers the development and deployment of technology designed to protect both the Swedish Armed Forces and critical civil infrastructure. Deliveries of the new systems are scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2028. This modular platform is engineered to detect, track, and neutralise low-flying small- to medium-sized drones, addressing the evolving risks posed by modern unmanned aerial threats.
The solution functions as a layered defense, integrating field-proven sensors and effectors from Saab alongside selected third-party technologies. By combining these elements into a single interoperable platform, the system is designed to connect seamlessly with Sweden’s existing defense assets. This approach ensures the technology can be easily adapted to different operational requirements while remaining cost-efficient.
Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s business area Surveillance, said, “With today’s order Sweden will acquire an advanced mobile, modular counter-unmanned aerial system. This technology enhances airspace security by detecting, tracking, and mitigating unmanned aerial threats, and can be easily integrated with other systems.”
The partnership between Saab, the Swedish Armed Forces, and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration aims to strengthen the nation’s current air and drone defence posture. Because the system is built on established, existing components, it is considered fully operational and ready for deployment. The modular nature of the platform allows for high levels of flexibility, ensuring it remains effective as drone technology continues to advance.
