MBDA-backed Hybrid Drones Ltd has successfully completed the first test flight of its HYDRA-400 ultra-high lift Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
The flight, witnessed by representatives from MBDA, demonstrated the expanded use cases for the innovative vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) platform. MBDA became a significant shareholder in the UK-based SME in 2025, providing technical and resource support to accelerate the platform toward production standards. This partnership focuses on the rapid development and weaponization of the hybrid jet-electric UAV.
The HYDRA-400 occupies a unique category in the drone market with no known direct competition. It features a modular design capable of carrying a payload of up to 400kg. This capacity allows the platform to perform a wide range of military and dual-use functions, including the employment of tactical weapons, ship-to-ship transfers, and last-mile logistics. Its robust design also supports logistical and casualty evacuation roles, and it is engineered for efficient battlefield assembly and transport via a standard flatbed truck.
Suzanne Jude, Senior Vice President – Sales & Business Development at MBDA, said, “This is a very significant development in our partnership with Hybrid Drones Ltd. Seeing the HYDRA-400 fly for the first time is truly exciting and a testament to the innovation that results from collaboration between industry leaders like MBDA, with our engineering expertise, and the cutting-edge technology of an SME like Hybrid Drones Ltd.”
The development pace remains significant as the two companies continue to refine the platform’s capabilities for operational use.
