Teledyne FLIR Defense has secured a contract to enhance the reconnaissance capabilities of the German Army with its advanced Black Hornet® 4 Personal Reconnaissance Systems.

These nano-drones, known for their lightweight design and advanced imaging capabilities, will provide German armed forces with real-time situational awareness in challenging environments.

The order comes as part of a two-year agreement between Teledyne FLIR and the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). Under this contract, Teledyne FLIR will supply Black Hornet 4 systems, spare parts, and training to ensure seamless integration into military operations. The contract was facilitated by Teledyne FLIR’s regional partner, European Logistic Partners (ELP) GmbH, based in Wuppertal, Germany, which serves as the contractor for BAAINBw.

The Black Hornet 4 represents the latest evolution in nano-drone technology, offering enhanced covert reconnaissance capabilities to small tactical units. Equipped with a 12-megapixel daytime camera and a high-resolution thermal imager, it provides sharp video and still imagery for improved decision-making on the battlefield. Weighing only 70g, the drone boasts a flight endurance of over 30 minutes and a range exceeding 2km. It is designed to operate effectively in adverse conditions, including 25-knot winds and rain, while benefiting from advanced obstacle avoidance features that enhance its maneuverability and reliability in complex environments.

Ketil Vanebo, Vice President of UAS Norway Operations at Teledyne FLIR Defense, said, “We’re proud to work with the Bundeswehr and ELP to deliver the unmatched capabilities of Black Hornet 4 to German armed forces. We are seeing increased adoption of the Black Hornet unmanned aircraft system throughout Europe as regional and global tensions remain high.

“A highly stealthy, advanced drone such as Black Hornet 4 gives warfighters a distinct edge when conducting their toughest missions.”

As modern military forces increasingly rely on unmanned systems for intelligence and surveillance, the Black Hornet 4 stands out as a vital tool for soldiers in the field, offering a combination of portability, endurance, and advanced technology to improve operational effectiveness.
