Rotron Aerospace Ltd has successfully completed a flight trial of its SkyLance One Way Effect system, marking a significant milestone for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Project Brakestop.
The Taskforce Kindred funded project validates the core technologies underpinning the capability and demonstrates how collaboration between government and industry can accelerate the delivery of operationally relevant defense systems. As a direct result of the project, Rotron Aerospace has expanded its workforce by creating over 160 highly skilled jobs across the United Kingdom defense aerospace sector, strengthening sovereign industrial capability in specialist engineering, manufacturing, and technology.
The project highlights an innovative approach to procurement and rapid product development designed to unlock the potential of agile UK small and medium-sized enterprises. Operating on a lean model with rapid development cycles, the company delivers advanced capabilities at a lower cost than many traditional prime contractors, offering enhanced value for taxpayers.
A defining feature of the system is its advanced propulsion technology, which delivers a substantially greater operational range than alternative solutions in its class. Because the propulsion system is designed, developed, and manufactured entirely within the United Kingdom, it ensures complete sovereign control over critical technology, production, and future development.
Alex Head, Chief Executive Officer of Rotron Aerospace, commented, “Project Brakestop is one of the most innovative programmes the UK MoD has delivered in recent years. Collaboration between the MoD, wider government, QinetiQ and industry has been critical to its success.
“This programme proves agile UK SMEs can deliver complex defense capability at pace, often outperforming traditional procurement models. Through sovereign technology, rapid development and lower-cost delivery, we can provide better value for the taxpayer while strengthening the UK defense industrial base. Programmes like Brakestop create capability, jobs and export opportunity. The UK needs more initiatives like this to maintain its technological advantage.”
The initiative demonstrates the economic and strategic value of investing in UK sovereign technology, creating substantial national security benefits and global export opportunities. Rotron estimates that every £1 invested by the MoD in defense innovation could generate over a tenfold return in future export revenue, delivering economic returns while strengthening partnerships with allied nations.
