General Dynamics Mission Systems has secured a $19 million contract modification from the U.S. Air Force to finalize qualification and pre-production readiness for the Next Generation Survival Radio.

The agreement involves completing U.S. Department of War certifications and delivering approximately 300 pre-production units designed to support operational training and evaluation. This development phase utilizes the company’s established expertise in National Security Agency-certified products and combat survival communications. The program aims to bolster the operational readiness of both the U.S. Air Force and the broader Department of War.

Technologically, the Next Generation Survival Radio is built upon the architecture of the HOOK2 and HOOK3 survival radios. These predecessor systems are currently utilized by the U.S. military and various international allies. The new system is designed to evolve these combat search and rescue capabilities to function within increasingly complex future operating environments.

Rachel Oberc, Vice President of Network and Communication Systems, commented, “When it matters most, the survival radio is what brings our pilots and aircrew home. Our team has supported that mission for decades and we are proud to carry that legacy forward with the Next Generation Survival Radio.

“This contract puts production-ready hardware in the hands of operators so we can deliver a system they can trust with their lives. NGSR reflects a sustained partnership between the United States Air Force and General Dynamics, combining years of collaborative prototyping and development with significant investment by both parties to deliver a next-generation capability to the warfighter.”

The project is being managed through an Other Transaction Authority Project Agreement by SOSSEC, Inc., supporting the Air Force’s Electronic Systems Directorate. General Dynamics Mission Systems, which employs approximately 12,000 people globally, provides defense and cybersecurity solutions across multiple domains.

Work on the contract will take place at the Scottsdale, Arizona, facility. Operations are scheduled to begin immediately and are projected to continue through 2027.
