Sam Eckholm has released a video testing out the Honeywell 360 Display to see if he can drive a 5-ton Hummer with the windows completely blacked out.
The helmet-mounted display uses mixed reality to give drivers a 360 degree view of the world around them, and has been integrated into the vehicle in the footage. Honeywell’s software stitches together live data from the cameras and sensors mounted on the vehicle to create a 360 view around the vehicle.
The testing aims to get a sense for the off-road capabilities of the Honeywell 360 Display in both commercial and military applications, requiring rugged and durable technology in a range of environments.
“So what we’ve designed into the system is that if you do lose a camera, the system will compensate for it, but it also sends an alert to the drive that says you’re not operating at full capacity, so there’s this graceful degradation,” said Gerhard Schröter, Director of Army Ground Programs.
