The AMX-56 Leclerc MBT, designed and produced by  KDNS France (formerly Nexter Systems / GIAT) and operational since the early 1990s, was developed to replace the AMX-30 in the French Army. Known for its innovative design and cutting-edge technology, the Leclerc is one of the most advanced tanks globally. It combines modular armor systems, high survivability, and a state-of-the-art fire control system to deliver exceptional performance in modern combat scenarios. The tank is also in service with the United Arab Emirates.

The Leclerc is designed for speed and precision, featuring an autoloader that significantly reduces crew size to three: commander, gunner, and driver. Its modular construction facilitates easy upgrades, repairs, and customization for specific mission requirements.

Leclerc MBT Design and Features

The Leclerc’s design emphasizes mobility, firepower, and protection. Its modular armor offers flexibility, allowing quick adaptation to varying threat levels and operational environments. The tank’s survivability is enhanced through its advanced composite armor and protection systems, including soft-kill and hard-kill active defenses.

Its compact size, compared to other MBTs, allows for superior maneuverability on various terrains. The tank’s hydropneumatic suspension provides exceptional stability, enabling precise targeting even on the move.

Leclerc Tank Firepower

The Leclerc is equipped with a GIAT CN120-26 120mm smoothbore gun, compatible with NATO-standard ammunition. The gun features an automatic loading system, enabling a high rate of fire and reducing crew requirements. Secondary armament includes a coaxial 12.7mm machine gun and a 7.62mm roof-mounted machine gun for close-in defense.

Its fire control system incorporates laser rangefinders, thermal imaging, and advanced targeting computers, ensuring high accuracy and lethality.

Mobility

Powered by a V8X-1500 Hyperbar diesel engine producing 1,500 horsepower, the Leclerc achieves a top speed of 71 km/h on roads and 50 km/h off-road. Its operational range extends to 550 km with additional fuel tanks. The tank’s power-to-weight ratio of 27 hp/ton ensures excellent acceleration and agility.

The Leclerc’s suspension system and high ground clearance enable it to traverse diverse terrains, from urban landscapes to rugged fields.

Variants of the Leclerc Tank

Several Leclerc variants have been developed, including:

  • Leclerc Series 2: Incorporates improved armor and electronic systems.
  • Leclerc AZUR: Designed for urban combat, featuring additional protection against RPGs and IEDs.
  • Leclerc UAE: Customized for the United Arab Emirates, featuring a unique cooling system and desert camouflage.
