The ALARM (Air Launched Anti-Radiation Missile) was developed by MBDA (formerly British Aerospace) to provide the Royal Air Force (RAF) with an advanced tool for suppressing enemy air defenses (SEAD). Its introduction marked a significant enhancement in the ability of air forces to neutralize radar-guided surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems and anti-aircraft artillery.

The missile’s unique feature is its capability to engage radar systems that employ counter-shutdown tactics. By utilizing a parachute descent system, the ALARM can hover midair, waiting for adversaries to reactivate their radar systems, before striking. This innovation ensured that even passive defenses, where radars are temporarily switched off to evade targeting, could be neutralized.

The ALARM missile was operationally deployed in various conflicts, including the Gulf War and subsequent operations in Iraq. Its effectiveness in degrading enemy radar networks played a pivotal role in securing air superiority for allied forces.

ALARM Design and Features

The ALARM missile embodies a sophisticated design tailored for modern SEAD missions. Its physical configuration, advanced seeker system, and propulsion technology work together to ensure precision and adaptability.

  • Physical Design: The ALARM has a slim, aerodynamic body that allows for easy integration with a variety of aircraft, including the Panavia Tornado and other NATO platforms. Its compact structure ensures minimal drag during deployment.
  • Parachute Descent System: One of ALARM’s standout features is its ability to deploy a parachute post-launch. This enables the missile to loiter in the air, scanning for radar signals. If the radar reactivates, the missile can descend and strike, overcoming traditional radar shutdown tactics.
  • Seeker Technology: The passive radar homing seeker is a crucial component of the missile’s capability. It precisely detects and locks onto radar emissions, even in environments with multiple electronic signals.
  • Warhead: A high-explosive warhead, optimized to destroy radar antennas and associated systems, ensures complete neutralization of the target.

The combination of these features gives the ALARM an unparalleled edge in suppressing hostile radar systems.

ALARM Performance and Capabilities

The ALARM is tailored for high-stakes missions where air superiority is critical. Its versatility and effectiveness make it an invaluable asset for SEAD operations.

In terms of range, the missile can engage radar targets from significant distances, allowing launch aircraft to remain out of harm’s way. Its solid rocket motor provides rapid acceleration, ensuring that the missile reaches its target before enemy countermeasures can be deployed. The missile’s supersonic speed further minimizes the time it is exposed to interception.

A key operational capability is its adaptability to various radar tactics. With the parachute-assisted loitering feature, the missile remains effective against adversaries employing intermittent radar activation as a defense mechanism. This ensures the ALARM can disable even the most elusive radar systems.
