The U.S. Air Force has officially designated General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI)’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) prototype as the YFQ-42A.

This designation underscores the aircraft’s role in the future of air superiority, leveraging advanced autonomy and seamless integration with crewed platforms.

GA-ASI President David R. Alexander said, “We’re proud to get a new official aircraft designation. YFQ-42A continues a long and distinguished history for GA-ASI that dates back to the 1990s and the debut of the RQ-1 Predator®, which later changed to MQ-1 Predator. That uncrewed aircraft gave way to the MQ-9A Reaper®, the MQ-20 Avenger®, our new MQ-9B SkyGuardian® and SeaGuardian®, and many others.

“These aircraft represent an unrivaled history of capable, dependable uncrewed platforms that meet the needs of America’s warfighters and point the way to a significant new era for airpower.”

The announcement follows a 2024 USAF decision selecting GA-ASI to develop and build the YFQ-42A. As part of the Mission Design Series (MDS), this aircraft represents the first in a new generation of uncrewed fighter aircraft designed to operate alongside manned platforms. The YFQ-42A will be instrumental in securing air dominance, utilizing autonomous technologies and crewed-uncrewed teaming to counter enemy threats in contested environments.

The Air Force is actively developing Autonomous Collaborative Platforms to maintain its strategic advantage, and semi-autonomous aircraft like the YFQ-42A are critical to this initiative. These aircraft are designed to be flexible, cost-effective force multipliers that enhance mission effectiveness and overall combat capability. The YFQ-42A will seamlessly integrate with current and next-generation crewed aircraft, expanding operational reach and ensuring continued air superiority.

One of the key advantages of the YFQ-42A is its ability to provide scalable fighter capacity—delivering an affordable mass of combat-ready assets on a threat-relevant timeline. This approach ensures that the USAF can maintain overwhelming force projection while optimizing costs and operational efficiency.

The YFQ-42A designation follows the Air Force’s prior decision to classify GA-ASI’s predecessor aircraft, the XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station. Ordered by the Air Force Research Lab, the XQ-67A played a key role in developing concepts necessary to implement the CCA vision. The transition from the XQ-67A to the YFQ-42A represents an evolution in uncrewed combat capabilities, reinforcing the Air Force’s commitment to next-generation warfare.

With its advanced autonomous capabilities and cost-effective design, the YFQ-42A is set to play a pivotal role in the future of air combat, ensuring that the U.S. Air Force maintains a dominant edge in contested battlespaces.
